Christmas Three and gifts

Be a Santa to a Senior

Local home care company, Home Instead Senior Care Durham, joined forces with Wilkinson’s and local community organisations to launch their festive gift-giving scheme ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’.

Generous shoppers donated a fantastic total of 153 gifts which will now be given to local older people who will appreciate a present this Christmas.

‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ Christmas trees were put up in Wilkinsons’s stores in South Shields, Washington and Durham and were decorated with gift tags detailing a gift that an older person would enjoy receiving. Customers and staff were invited to pick a tag and then donate that particular item.

The Home Instead team have now wrapped all of the gifts and they are being delivered over the next few days to older people in the local community with the help of the National Armed Forces Charity (SSAFA) and the Royal Voluntary Services (RVS) in Durham and South Shields and a local lunch club.

Owner of Home Instead, Trudi Jameson said, “We had a fantastic time collecting the gifts. Wilkinson’s customers were amazing and really got behind what we were trying to do, it’s wonderful how everyone has worked together to bring a bit of festive cheer to older people in our local community this Christmas. I’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated gifts and a special mention to the staff at Wilkinson’s who ensured no tags were left on the trees on the final day and all of the volunteers and organisations that have made all of this possible!”

Home Instead have been so delighted with the success of the scheme, that they’re already making plans to roll it out again for next year.
