Why It’s Not Always Permanent: 7 Conditions That Mimic Dementia

When a loved one starts showing signs of confusion or memory loss, the fear is immediate. We assume the worst. But through my journey as both a family member of someone living with dementia and as a professional Caregiver, I’ve learned that the “fog” of memory loss isn’t always what it seems.
At Home Instead Dartford, we believe that to care for someone, you must first understand them. Sometimes, what looks like dementia is actually a treatable medical condition.
7 Conditions That Mimic Dementia
Before assuming a permanent diagnosis, it is vital to rule out these “mimics”:

My Personal “Why”: From Family to Community
I didn’t start these workshops just to run a business. My passion comes from a very personal place. I have a close family member living with dementia, and in the early days of providing care myself, I realized very quickly: there is always more to learn.
The more I learned, the more I felt a responsibility to educate others. This is why I became the lead trainer for Home Instead Dartford.
But my mission doesn’t stop at dementia. After losing two close friends to cardiac arrest, I knew I had to do more for our community. That is why I personally deliver Hands-only CPR and Scam Awareness sessions alongside our dementia workshops.
Small Steps, Big Impact: 3,700 and Counting
We started very small—just talking to one person or a tiny group at a time. Slowly, the word spread. Schools, community groups, Care home and local clubs began inviting us in.
To date, we have reached over 3,700 people. While that number motivates me, what matters more is the individual. That’s one more person in Dartford, Bexley or West Gravesend who might see someone struggling in the street and know exactly how to help.
Step into Their World: The Dementia Experience Hub
If you really want to understand dementia, you have to experience it. At our Dementia Experience Hub, we use sensory tools to show you what life is like for your loved ones.
The feedback we get is often the same: “It feels unreal,” or “That was so frustrating.” But then comes the breakthrough: “Now I finally understand why they were acting that way.” If you know someone living with dementia, I invite you to book a free session with us. It changes everything.
Making Dartford & Bexley Dementia-Friendly
A person with dementia should feel safe in their own high street. I want to say a huge thank you to the local businesses who have stepped up to take our training and become “Dementia Friendly.” Next time you visit these shops, know that they are part of a more compassionate community:
