Running from 12th to 18th May 2025, this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week carries the theme: “There is Power in Community.” It’s a powerful reminder of how connection and support networks can positively impact our mental health—particularly for older adults, who may experience loneliness, routine changes, or emotional challenges.

At Home Instead West Lancashire and Chorley, we believe that strong community ties and compassionate care are essential to good mental wellbeing. Whether through companionship, routine support, or simply a friendly face, there are many ways to uplift someone’s day.

Here are three simple yet effective tips to help improve mental wellbeing in later life:

1. Encourage Social Connections
Staying in touch with friends, family, or neighbours—whether in person or virtually—can help reduce feelings of isolation. Even small social moments, like a chat over tea, can brighten someone’s day.

2. Keep the Mind and Body Active
Activities such as gentle walking, puzzles, reading, or creative hobbies stimulate the brain and support mood regulation. Keeping mentally and physically engaged fosters a sense of purpose.

3. Maintain Routine and Structure
A consistent daily routine brings stability and comfort. Helping older adults structure their day with enjoyable and meaningful tasks can improve focus and emotional wellbeing.

💚 This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s celebrate the strength of togetherness—and the difference we can make when we support one another.
