Healthy body and mind.

Good news, we’re all living longer! It’s not just about living, it’s about living life well.

Find below a few tips on how to keep both your body and brain healthy and active as you get older. Regular exercise and eating well are important factors, no matter what age you are. It can help control your blood pressure, body weight and cholesterol levels.

“I haven’t been physically active for a while?”

That’s okay! It is great that you’ve recognised this and you can now start off slowly. Try walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time several days each week to begin with and then build up the amount you exercise gradually. Always remember to ask your doctor for guidance.

Stretching! Yoga may be the first activity that springs to mind and for some, practising yoga may be a daunting thought. However, you can try starting off with one simple stretch whilst sitting or standing, the neck stretch. Slowly turn your head towards the right until you feel a slight stretch and hold this pose for 10 seconds. Then slowly turn your head to the left and hold for another 10 seconds.

How is your balance? Exercises which improve your balance are important as they can help to prevent falls and maintain your independence. If you have a solid chair to hand, (not one with wheels!) try the single limb stance. - Hold on to the back of the chair. Lift your right foot and balance on your left foot. Hold that position for as long as you can, then switch feet. The goal should be to stand on one foot without holding onto the chair and hold that pose for up to a minute.
