On Sunday 15th September, the Cheltenham Bowling Club opened their doors to the public and put on an incredible event called Bowlsfest19!
This was the perfect opportunity for members of the public to come and see what all the fuss is about at the club - a hidden gem, which is in the beautiful Suffolk Square, Cheltenham. As they say, you might not know they were there, unless you’ve been on the top deck of the number 10 bus that goes past!
The sun was shining all day and the smell of the BBQ and afternoon cream teas was simply divine. There were lots of activities for all the family, and Home Instead was fortunate to take part in the afternoon bowls tournament. Competing teams included Cheltenham Tigers Rugby Club, Special Olympics Gloucestershire and Cheltenham Town Football Club, with all proceeds from the event, going to the charity - Special Olympics Gloucestershire.
We were lucky to have some top tips and training from wonderful club members Sandra, Roger, Allen and Barry before (and during!) the rounds. Without their knowledge and expertise, we wouldn’t have been able to win the 3 out of 5 rounds that we did! It was certainly a nail-biting finish for our team with Sean Long knocking the Jack off the edge of the Green on the last bowl, giving them the win for that round.
A great day was had by all, everyone at the club was so welcoming, and we feel very lucky to have been part of this wonderful event.
We are already looking forward to the next Bowlsfest! (When we are sure to win!! Lessons already planned!) And would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone concerned.
If you have never been or would like to know more about Cheltenham Bowling Club, we would highly recommend getting in touch with them. They have lots of social events on throughout the year, and when the summer season ends, you get to play indoor bowls!
