What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition causing nerve cells in the brain to weaken and die, leading to symptoms like involuntary tremors, stiff muscles, balance issues, and slow movements. People with this condition may also experience depression, anxiety, and sleep issues.

An estimated166,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and although this can begin with mild symptoms, over time, they may require care to live independently. Parkinson’s care often involves:

What is a Care Plan, and why is this important for people with Parkinson’s?

According to Parkinson’s UK, 1 in 5 people with this condition are missing out on the care they need, so having a Care Plan helps guide the direction of care and ensure they have appropriate support as their condition progresses.

A Care Plan is a document written to outline the person’s exact health condition, subsequent needs, treatment goals, and the support that will help them to achieve the best quality of life. As Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, Care Plans should be flexible to account for changes in symptoms and needs over time. They should also coordinate everyone involved to ensure they are all on the same page, such as visiting healthcare workers, caregivers, family members, and any other practitioners that visit the home.

Does my loved one need a Care Plan?

Everyone who receives care at home should have a Care Plan, including those with Parkinson’s disease. As their condition progresses, it can become challenging to effectively manage symptoms, so a Care Plan helps ensure their needs are being met across the board.

If you have been looking after a loved one with Parkinson’s disease and find it difficult to manage things like medication schedules, mobility assistance and coordination of appointments, a Care Plan can help to streamline processes and make daily life easier, safer and less stressful.

A Care Plan is reviewed at least once a year, and combines input from doctors, caregivers and family members to create cohesive, coordinated and consistent care no matter which care worker is on duty.

What should be in a Parkinson’s Care Plan, and how do I obtain one?

A Care Plan is usually written after a Care Needs Assessment, and the local authority that carried out the assessment can arrange for the recommended support to be implemented. If you decide to pursue private care, a Care Plan can be made before care begins.

A standard Care Plan should include details like what the person can do independently, emergency contacts, equipment used, and more. For those with Parkinson’s, a Care Plan may also include things like:

  • A detailed breakdown of their diagnosis and other conditions
  • Medication schedules
  • The person’s preferred mobility support methods
  • Communication challenges
  • Recommended home adaptations to make moving around easier
  • Preferred daily schedules and routines
  • History of falls and risk factors

Before joining Home Instead, I built a comprehensive career in the social care sector, beginning in 1991 as a frontline care worker and advancing to senior leadership roles across both private and voluntary sector businesses.

Throughout my career, I have supported diverse care groups in a variety of settings, including community, residential, nursing, and secure environments. My experience spans working with older adults, including those living with dementia; individuals with physical disabilities and complex, long-term health needs; people with learning disabilities, including autism; individuals with enduring mental health challenges; individuals with current or past substance use and those with forensic backgrounds.

In 2002, I qualified as a social worker and have since maintained my professional registration with Social Work England.
