What is TDDI care?

TDDI care stands for the treatment of disease, disorder or injury, which encompasses several types of care to manage complex conditions. TDDI care is regulated by the Health and Social Care Act, and must be carried out under the supervision of NHS healthcare professionals or trained care agencies. This type of care may involve:

Although TDDI care can take place anywhere, it can be most beneficial at home.

Why is TDDI care at home important for older adults?

A 2021 study from the University of Oxford found that caring for vulnerable older people at home can help to improve patient outcomes, so having TDDI care in an environment they feel comfortable in could help to better support their recovery and wellbeing.

In addition, personalised home care helps older people to regain strength and independence in the place they plan to stay long-term, leading to more practical recovery goals that fit their lifestyle and help them get back to their regular routine. Research suggests 78.7% of those over 60 have two or more health conditions, so TDDI care at home may be especially helpful for them if they have a bespoke combination of needs, for example, medication management, mobility support and bowel care.

Do I need TDDI care?

If your older loved one has multiple health conditions that can be effectively managed outside of hospital, home-based TDDI care could help to reduce their risk of contracting a hospital-acquired infection. In addition, if they need complex treatments, TDDI care could allow them to access quality medical care at home to avoid disrupting their everyday life.

Managing health conditions independently can be challenging for older people due to mobility or dexterity issues, fatigue, cognitive decline, and other factors. If you have noticed your loved one struggling to manage alone, being admitted to hospital more often, showing reduced self-confidence, or struggling with a newly diagnosed condition, TDDI care could make them more comfortable.

Diane WIlliams , Head of Quality & Standards

I have worked with Home Instead since July 2016 as a member of the Quality Team, taking the role of Head of Quality & Standards in 2020.

Before joining Home Instead, I built a comprehensive career in the social care sector, beginning in 1991 as a frontline care worker and advancing to senior leadership roles across both private and voluntary sector businesses.

Throughout my career, I have supported diverse care groups in a variety of settings, including community, residential, nursing, and secure environments. My experience spans working with older adults, including those living with dementia; individuals with physical disabilities and complex, long-term health needs; people with learning disabilities, including autism; individuals with enduring mental health challenges; individuals with current or past substance use and those with forensic backgrounds.

In 2002, I qualified as a social worker and have since maintained my professional registration with Social Work England.
