What is visiting care?

Visiting care is a type of home care, meaning a professionally trained caregiver will come to your home, or the home of your older loved one, and provide support with daily tasks like:

Visiting care can help older adults remain in the comfort of their own home, and avoid unnecessary hospital visits or paying for full-time care in a care home if they do not need this. Visiting care can be easily arranged, whether a 30 minute visit each week, or several visits a day – we create a bespoke package to suit you.

Why is visiting care important for older adults?

Data suggests that in the next decade there will be a rise in demand for care homes for those aged 65+, as well as a rise in cost of care homes – home care provides a more affordable alternative. The UK government encourages older people to remain living in their own home for as long as possible, so visiting care enables them to stay independent, safe and engaged while living alone, and helps them avoid moving into a residential facility before this is necessary.

No matter what combination of care is needed–from a few hours of home help and medication management each week, to daily mobility support in order to safely move around at home–visiting care can help keep older adults in a familiar, comfortable environment.

How much does visiting care cost?

The cost of visiting care varies depending on location, who delivers care (i.e. local council vs a private agency), and the level of support needed. As a guideline, the NHS suggests home care rates are around £20ph, while Homecare.co.uk estimates £26-£38ph.

Home Instead offers support from trained caregivers with experience in specific conditions, and we can create a care package that respects your needs and budget. As an example, one of our clients required 7 hours of home visits for personal care costing £231 a week, but for more intensive needs, costs may increase to reflect the specialist qualifications and experience of the carer. Home care is one-on-one, and can be more affordable than other options like assisted living or care homes.

How to arrange and fund visiting care

If your loved one is struggling with everyday tasks, visiting care could help them to stay safe and independent at home. The first step is usually a chat with their GP or the local council to arrange a Care Needs Assessment which will determine the level of support needed and their eligibility for funding.

Local councils often offer means-tested financial support for those eligible, or you could get funded home care through NHS Continuing Healthcare. There are many ways to pay for home care depending on your circumstances, so it is always helpful to weigh up your options and research any potential funding that could ease your financial burden when caring for a loved one.
