Supporting an elderly parent in rural areas like the Mortimer/Burghfield Common area can challenging for families, particularly if they do not live locally, but our elderly home care services can be relied on to help.
Doreen lived in Stratfield Mortimer, and had been diagnosed with dementia two years earlier. Her daughter Emma found her mother’s needs competing with Emma’s job and with the demands of a teenage family, and came to us for help because Doreen clearly wasn’t eating properly. We provided mid-day visits to Doreen and worked with her in the kitchen to prepare lunch, re-kindling Doreen’s interest in food whilst providing social interaction and mental stimulation. For Emma it was a major worry resolved.

We prepare our care plans in liaison with clients and their families, so as to gain a full and accurate picture of the client’s needs and what they want from our home care services, and how we can be supportive to loving families.
Jo said this about our care for her mother in law in Burghfield Common: “Home Instead provide daily visits for my mother in law who has Alzheimer’s and other mental health issues. Setting up care was easy, with a thorough and understanding review of what we needed. We felt very listened to. Carers are reliable, friendly and flexible, with the client at the centre of everything. I feel that my mother in law is being cared for by kind, professional people and she, and I, are very happy.”
Mortimer Common, or just “Mortimer”, sits astride Mortimer Hill; a mile north lies the village of Burghfield Common, and both lie just on the Berkshire side of the boundary with Hampshire.
Mortimer is steeped in ancient history, with the iron age settlement Calleva Atrebatum and the former Roman town of Silchester nearby. We discuss the Roman remains in our review of historic walks in north Hampshire.
Despite recent growth, Burghfield Common has retained its community feel. It is crossed by a stream, has two ponds and a pond house, and is surrounded by rural tranquillity. In angling circles “The Burghfield Common” refers to a mighty 62½ lb English common carp pursued by anglers in nearby Burghfield Main Lake.
