Overnight care is generally categorised as either “sleeping nights” (or “sleep-in nights”) or “waking nights”. Sleeping nights means that a carer will sleep at the client’s home, but be available for any emergencies that might arise and to assist if necessary once or twice overnight with medication, trips to the toilet or similar. Waking nights means that the carer is awake and in attendance all night, so is able to provide more frequent care and attention such as continence support, medication, regular repositioning or emotional support. Night time carers will often also assist their clients in preparing for bed in the evenings, with personal care in the mornings, and by preparing breakfast.

Get in touch Why Overnight Care may be right for you
Sleeping nights are often provided for clients who need the comfort of having another person in the house overnight. They can alleviate feelings of isolation, confusion and even fear experienced by some with dementia and other progressive conditions, allowing a client who might otherwise worry and wander to get a good night’s sleep. Waking nights are provided for clients who wake frequently during the night needing care and support, and are often requested by clients who have recently been discharged from hospital and need significant support whilst they complete their recovery at home. Whatever night time care you might require, we will provide a service which is carefully tailored to your needs and can be adjusted as those needs change.

We are overwhelmed with the sheer professionalism and humanity that your agency provide. You have proved to be very flexible and treat my mother with such respect and dignity. It gives us, finally, peace of mind for the times when we cannot be with mum. For that, we cannot thank you enough.
Jane, client's daughter

Each of the three regular caregivers treats my mother with the utmost kindness and respect, and she looks forward to their visits. Each of the ladies provides a different kind of experience from short outdoor walks to board games to exercise and massage. The visits have enabled her to continue to live independently in her home. I have nothing but appreciation for the work that the caregivers and other staff do, and I would recommend Home Instead (Basingstoke) to anyone in similar circumstances.

David, client's husband

Guy, client's son

Both my parents have been supported by Home Instead for many years and the service is, in all the family’s view, excellent. All the carers have been very professional, friendly, attentive, always going the extra mile, treat their clients with the utmost dignity and all in all provide a top class care service. The management team is also top class, very professional, always quick to respond, always providing solutions to problems, have always provided top class carers, and often come themselves to keep in touch with clients.

Setting up care was easy, with a thorough and understanding review of what we needed. We felt very listened to.
Carers are reliable, friendly and flexible, with the client at the centre of everything. They are knowledgeable and skilled.
I feel that my mother in law is being cared for by kind, professional people and she, and I, are very happy.
Jo, client's daughter in law

We really appreciate the service offered by Home Instead in supporting my mother in her
own home; my mother likes all the care personnel that visit and she looks forward to
their visits. We were delighted that Home Instead took the trouble to find out what my
mother likes to do and her interests, and care personnel are a good ‘match.
Client's daughter

I am enjoying the friendly professional and helpful company of my two live in carers
who interchange fortnightly.
Barbara - live-in client

I have been involved with Home Instead Basingstoke, initially through Let’s Move, for four years and have met many of the staff and found them very pleasant and helpful.
Bob on behalf of his partner, Beryl

Very pleased with the care . Every effort is made to provide good continuity of care with
any new carers introduced to our father with an existing carer that dad is familiar with.
The carers arrive on time, are kind, friendly, respectful and provide dad every support
to allow him to stay in his own home. Thank you
Client's son, Neil

We started using Home Instead care team in June last year and I couldn’t have asked
for anything more from them. Right from the initial interview when they came to
meet us we were impressed with them. They seem to have found those ‘Goldilocks’
qualities of having excellent skills, knowledge and efficiency appropriate to the job,
while being kindness itself, not only to my husband who needs the care but also in
offering much needed support to me. I could not ask for more.
Anne, wife of a client

My family did a lot of research before selecting Home Instead. I am very pleased with
their choice of care company.

Tailored Overnight Care in Basingstoke
Reg lived in Sherfield on Loddon and due to dementia was greatly troubled by hallucinations, causing him to wander, get angry and potentially put himself in danger at night. However when we provided an overnight carer to sleep in the spare room and be available to Reg if needed during the small hours, his wanderings stopped. As a result Reg slept much better and his hallucinations reduced, leaving him very much happier and more relaxed.

Get in touch Trusted Overnight Care from experienced home care professionals in Basingstoke
Sue had cancer and returned to her home in Kingsclere, after her latest round of chemotherapy, needing overnight care due to continence problems. We provided a carer each night who would help Sue prepare for bed in the evenings and then remain nearby ready to help her to the bathroom when needed. As well as the physical assistance that the carer was able to provide, Sue was also greatly comforted by having a friendly voice to comfort her when she awoke distressed and confused during the night. The overnight carers helped Sue to shower and dress in the mornings, and prepared breakfast for her. We provided two other visits during the day to help Sue with her meals and in managing her continence.

FAQs
- What is the difference between "Sleep-in" care and "Waking Night" care?
During a sleep-in visit (or sleeping night), the carer sleeps in your home, in a different room, but is available to help if you wake up or need assistance during the night. On a waking night, the carer stays awake and in attendance throughout the night to keep an eye on you and help as and when needed.
- How does overnight care help a person with dementia?
A lot of people with dementia experience a symptom called “sundowning”, which is a tendency to get confused and agitated in the evenings. People living with dementia can also have a tendency to wake up in the night, get confused and potentially put themselves at risk. Having a calm, familiar face to support and reassure them, and guide them back to bed, can avoid falls and reduce night-time anxiety.
- Can a carer who stays overnight assist with night-time medication?
Yes. If you need to take medicine at certain times of the night or early morning, our carer will make sure you take it as needed, so you can stay on track with your health plan.
- Do carers require their own room for a sleep-in visit?
Yes, for a sleep-in service we ask that you provide a guest room or a comfortable bed in a separate room so that the carer can sleep when they are not needed. For a waking night they only need a comfortable chair and a peaceful place to sit.
- Is overnight care only for a few nights, or can it last a long time?
Both are possible. After illness and/or a stay in hospital, we can provide a short period of overnight care to help you get back on your feet. Some caring families use us for a few nights each week to get some respite and much-needed sleep, while other clients have someone with them every night to keep them safe and provide peace of mind.
