September is World Alzheimer’s Month and 21st September is World Alzheimer’s Day. This year's theme is "Ask About Dementia" to encourage dialogue and timely diagnosis.
The annual campaign is the initiative of Alzheimer’s Disease International, who estimate that there are now over 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, and that this number will double every 20 years.
In the UK it is estimated that nearly one million people and one in 11 of those over 65 are living with the condition, and it is the biggest cause of death.
Hampshire County Council estimates that 24,000 people are living with dementia in Hampshire.
More than half of us will know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia.
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people living with dementia in the UK has not had a diagnosis, whilst for Hampshire the HCC estimates that over half of dementia sufferers are undiagnosed.
By raising awareness and promoting education around the subject, the campaign aims to promote early diagnosis and a more supportive environment around affected individuals and their families.
Our short video above depicts how someone living with dementia could be at risk, simply as a result of apparently being a little forgetful or confused. Did you spot some of the risks – including the key left in the front door, the burnt lunch, the gas ring left on, the missed appointment and the missed medication?

With the motto “Safe & Found”, the Herbert Protocol is a national scheme offered by the police to help find a loved one as quickly as possible if they go missing.
The protocol consists of a form which the family or friends of a vulnerable person can fill out in advance to help the police if that person goes missing. It covers vital information including age, description, clothing, habits and a photograph, to aid the search for them.
Use of the Herbert Protocol can save the police precious time in the critical hours immediately after a vulnerable person goes missing, and provide some peace of mind for families and friends.
