Live-in Care: an under-appreciated opportunity

Live-in care is a natural follow-on when an elderly person needs more support than can easily be provided through visiting home care. We look at what live-in can offer.

What is Live-in Care?

Live-in care means having a trained and experienced carer living with you in your home and providing personalised one-to-one care. The carer will fit into your daily routines and offer you the support you need throughout the day to maintain those routines and continue to thrive.

Your live-in care package will be drawn up to suit your particular needs, with a carer whom you feel comfortable with. If you need personal care to help you get ready in the mornings then that will be part of it. If you want some help around the house, then of course your live-in carer will do that. And when you need companionship – someone to sit, chat and provide a bit of mental stimulation, then your live-in carer will always be on hand.

The Benefits of Live-in Care

With a live-in carer, there will be none of the upheaval, both physical and emotional, of leaving (and probably selling) your own home to move into a care home. You remain in the surroundings that give you comfort, joy and many happy memories.

You can continue to enjoy the meals you want, when you want them, and you can continue to get as involved as you want in preparing those meals – whether that means just having the carer do the washing up, or giving her carte blanche to prepare the dish of your choice.

Have you stopped going out because it’s simply too much effort? Or have you drifted away from your old hobbies but would love to pick them up again given a bit of encouragement or someone to help with the fiddly bits? Step forward your live-in carer, who can help you feel part of the community again or provide the support you need to show off your creativity.

What do people say?

“Mum’s still living in the home she and my Dad spent their lifetimes creating, but with her 1:1 carer she has more freedom and is happier than I have seen her in years.”

“My Dad’s got a new lease of life. He’s sleeping better, he’s eating properly, and with his carer he’s re-visiting some of the pubs he used to frequent as a younger man.”

“After Dad died, Mum’s dementia meant she couldn’t really look after herself and she was just going downhill. She totally refused to go into a care home and I felt stuck, but she did agree to a live-in carer and it’s been really successful.”

Our Approach to Live-in Care

We provide fully managed live-in care.

This means that we handle all the arrangements, so you don’t have to. Hence the carer will be selected and fully trained, managed, employed and paid by us. We will arrange all carer rotations and cover their holidays and other absences, to give you a seamless service.

The main alternative is to use an introduction agency, which might be right for some people but the carer will be self-employed and the family will need to take on the burden and risks of managing the service, including paying the carer.
