You're never too old to care

Steve, a care professional at Home Instead in Worthing, is a wonderful example of an ‘older’ person who says that caregiving is “perfect for someone of my age!” As a care professional for the company, Steve visits his elderly clients regularly and helps them with everyday tasks such as shopping, cooking, as well as more personal care in their morning or evening routines, assisting them to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as they wish. He also provides them with the companionship that elderly people so often need and the time to talk.

Steve is part of a new generation of workers who are starting new careers when they would traditionally be thinking about putting their feet up.

Steve, 63, from Lancing, had previously worked in manufacturing, and saw an article in the local paper about Home Instead, and decided to give us a call to find out more.

Steve says, “Being a care professional is wonderful I get so much enjoyment out of it. I am really happy in my role – it really is the most rewarding job in the world!”

“My first client was a wonderful old gentleman who needed end-of-life care. It was as much about supporting his wife as looking after him.”

“This job is just as challenging as my career in the manufacturing industry, but it is so much more satisfying. It’s good to know that I can help make a real difference to the lives of local people. It sounds corny, but that feeling of giving something back makes me very happy.”

Simon McGee, owner of Home Instead in Worthing said, “We are so lucky to have Steve as a care professional. He has been an incredibly compassionate and engaging carer from the moment he started and has demonstrated that with the right attitude, you can achieve great things. Our aim is to be the employer of choice for anyone with the right attitude: we only employ those who we would be happy to care for our loved ones.”

“We match our care professionals to clients and many of our clients would like to be cared for by someone closer to their own age. Older care professionals have the life skills and emotional maturity to understand the issues faced by those in need of care, as well as the strain this places on families. Many of our staff are in their fifties or sixties.”

“The work is part-time so is ideal for anyone who with the right attitude who can spare some time in the mornings, evenings and every other weekend”.
