International Dementia Guru comes to Wimbledon
Internationally acclaimed dementia care expert, Teepa Snow, delivered a special and fascinating dementia workshop to a packed hall at the Lantern Arts Centre in Raynes Park on Monday.
The highly interactive dementia workshop, organised by Clare Jefferies of Home Instead Senior Care - Wimbledon & Kingston was delivered to more than 200 members of the local community including police, social workers, dementia nurses, older peoples groups, professionals from the dementia arena as well as those who care for someone living with dementia.
Teepa is a leading American trainer and consultant providing support and care that places the person living with dementia in a pivotal role when determining what is needed. Her goal is to help communities, professionals, families, and individuals develop the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to better support and care for someone living with the brain changes of dementia.
Commenting on the workshop, Clare Jefferies said, “I am always thinking about those in the community including our clients and their families and look for ways we can help support them either through our care or events and clubs in the community. To get Teepa to run a workshop in Wimbledon was like a dream come true. I have followed Teepa on YouTube for many years. She brings dementia to life, offering practical solutions to real life situations. I have tried over the years to replicate her techniques as she is so engaging. Teepa taught us how to manage challenging situations with someone living with dementia, but also to understand why the person with dementia reacts in the way they do.
Everyone left inspired and enlightened. One attendee said, “I have been on a lot of training courses, but I have never learnt as much as I did this morning.”
Another attendee commented, “Thank you Clare for organising the Teepa Snow workshop. As someone who has always met life’s challenges head on and been able to ‘fix’ whatever has been thrown at me, I cannot ‘fix’ my husband which is extremely hard to come to terms with. I have a much better understanding now why my husband has the many difficulties he does. I took many notes and will write them up and send them to our four children with Teepa Snow’s website in the hope they can have a better understanding too.”
Teepa also commented on the workshop, “It was such fun, sharing my knowledge with such an engaging and interested audience.”
