Community Dementia Workshop

Doing Our Bit to Raise Awareness During Dementia Action Week

At Home Instead Weston super Mare, Clevedon & Burnham on Sea, we put on Dementia Awareness Workshops twice a year for members of the community to attend. The main aim is to help families understand more about a condition they, or their loved ones, may have recently been diagnosed with. It can be difficult to get an appointment with a specialist or GP, so we want to provide something that is easy to access, supportive and informative until they can get more information or help from the NHS.
We also welcome working people from various sectors that may come into contact with individuals living with dementia, and want to learn more so they can provide a better service to these individuals.

Dementia Action Week takes place from 13 – 19th May this year, so we planned to have our workshop on Tuesday 14th. We had 9 bookings made, a full house! We were delighted to welcome a wide range of people to this workshop, from families to professionals, and even a UWE Student Nurse!

Our workshops are led by our fabulous Care Pro-come-Team Leader, Tessa. She has many years of experience in care and particularly, dementia care. She has a strong interest and passion for dementia and keeps her knowledge on the subject up to date in her spare time, looking into advancements made in the research and treatment area. Tessa has completed our City & Guilds Dementia Training and has also completed a Train The Trainer qualification in teaching the subject to others. As well as leading our Dementia Workshops, she also takes our Care Professionals through their City & Guilds qualifications. We are lucky to have such a fantastic person on our team and want to give a big shout out to Tessa!

We are so proud to be able to offer this useful event free of charge to our community. We have always had exceptional feedback, and are so happy the workshops have genuinely helped people understand Dementia a bit more.

About Dementia

Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. Symptoms can include memory loss, confusion, and problems with speech and understanding. It is important to note that dementia is not a single disease but a collective term for several symptoms that result from damage to the brain caused by different diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Excellent training from Home Instead, exactly the quality and standard of education we would like to see everyone working in a care environment doing as part of their mandatory training.
