Staying Active in Later Life: Supporting Older Adults in Exeter, Teignmouth, Dawlish & Newton Abbot

Across West Exeter and Teignbridge, including Exeter, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Starcross and Okehampton, our Care Professionals are busy every day supporting older adults to stay active and independent.
As we age, even the simplest everyday movements such as making the bed, putting the kettle on, tidying a room all play a vital role in keeping us independent and well. Continuing to move our bodies, in whatever way we can, is one of the most important foundations for maintaining strength, confidence, and overall wellbeing.
The NHS recommends regular movement to improve strength, balance and flexibility, all of which help prevent falls. It also highlights that physical activity supports cardiovascular health, mobility and cognitive function. For older adults living with dementia, Dementia UK notes that movement can improve mood and support better daily routines, including sleep patterns. Gentle activity also helps maintain cognitive function.

Within all of this, we know that social connection plays a vital role in ageing well. Age UK reports that loneliness can significantly impact health, increasing the risk of depression and cognitive decline. Therefore, group activities and gentle exercise sessions are a fantastic way help older adults stay connected and engaged.
There are many local opportunities for gentle exercising and socialising here in West Exeter, and we are incredibly fortunate with the amount of beautiful green space that surrounds us, from Dawlish Town Beach, a whole host of local parks, to popular tourist destinations as highlighted in our blog.
