Seasonal Tips: Keeping Older Loved Ones Safe and Social Through Devon Winters

When the weather cools and nights draw in, older adults can feel the effects of winter more than most. Cold homes, shorter days and isolation can take a toll.

When the weather cools and nights draw in, older adults can feel the effects of winter more than most. Cold homes, shorter days and isolation can take a toll, but with a bit of planning, winter can still be full of warmth and connection.

Stay Warm, Stay Safe

Make sure your loved one’s home stays at least 18°C in living areas. Encourage cosy layers, warm blankets and slippers with good grip. If you’re worried about heating costs, Devon County Council’s Warm Homes team can offer advice.

Prevent Seasonal Illness

Encourage flu and COVID boosters, regular handwashing, and healthy meals with plenty of hydration. Our carers often prepare hearty soups and hot drinks that are both comforting and nutritious.

Keep Spirits High

Dark evenings can lead to loneliness. Encourage phone calls, visits, or join local community groups in Totnes or Dawlish that host afternoon teas and activities. Companionship visits from a friendly carer can make all the difference too.

Outdoor Safety

If your loved one enjoys getting out, ensure paths are cleared of leaves and well-lit. Even a short walk in fresh air lifts the mood and helps maintain strength.

At Home Instead, we believe winter should feel like a season of comfort, not isolation. Our Care Professionals help clients across West Exeter, Teignbridge and South Devon stay safe, warm and connected.
