Discover how the team at Home Instead Wandsworth Lambeth and Dulwich champions outstanding dementia care during Dementia Action Week and all year round.

At this time of Dementia Action Week May 2024, our focus at Home Instead Wandsworth sharpens even more on the support needed by older adults living with dementia in our local area. We’re proud to share the initiatives that not only mark this significant week but also our year-round commitment to dementia care within our local South London community.

Dementia Action in our local community in South London

At Home Instead Wandsworth, we run memory cafes and groups, to provide spaces of empathy and understanding for both older adults and their carers. And at the heart of our Wandsworth office is Tony, our director and a dedicated Alzheimer’s Dementia Ambassador. Tony’s dedication is evident through his work in leading over 100 Dementia Friends sessions and onboarding more than 2000 Dementia Friends, growing community strength and awareness. In addition, Tony is a driving force in the Southwark Dementia Action Alliance, offering his expertise through online sessions to educate and empower.

Another example of how our team at Home Instead Wandsworth takes action is as part of the Dementia Community Research Network – a team of community, public and research partners from across South London, working together for better dementia care. Working together, as part of the network, produces research that has the potential to improve care for people affected by dementia.

Attending a recent event at King’s College Hospital was our owner Tony and others in our team dedicated to enhancing dementia awareness, including Olivia, Annabelle, and senior nurse Andy Wells, who champions our Butterfly Cafe.

This Dementia Action Week, Tony will also conduct a public Dementia Friends session in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society. Illustrating our call to action for others to learn, support and contribute positively to the lives of those affected by dementia.

A case study: “Mum had dementia which progressed rapidly”

As well as with our community initiatives, it’s through our thoughtful and consistent home care that we truly make a difference. One client’s daughter shared her experience with Home Instead Wandsworth, illustrating the profound effect our Care Professionals can have with consistent outstanding care:

A case study Wandsworth

“We engaged Home Instead for my fiercely independent mother when she was in her early 90’s. I was going away and wanted help to ensure that she was taking her asthma medication. By the time I came back from holiday the carer (the same carer for each visit) was helping Mum shower and dress, loading the washing machine, doing some shopping, and tidying the kitchen. Mum enjoyed her company. They started going out for coffee and cake.

As mum became frailer we gradually extended the hours until she had a team of carers coming in 3 times a day 7 days a week. The team was constant and they were all so kind and caring. Mum had dementia which progressed rapidly.

She needed more support so 5 months ago we asked Home Instead to provide 24-hour “live-in” care. Two lovely carers rotated so they got to understand Mum and her needs. They did everything for her, including personal care, with care and compassion. The communication from the Home Instead team with me was always excellent.”
