Christmas can be a joyful season, but for some older adults, it can also be a time when loneliness feels heavier. Many people in our communities spend the festive period with limited contact from family or friends. A simple, thoughtful gift can help lift someone’s spirits and remind them that their community cares.

This year, Home Instead Tyne Valley is organising a Christmas gift drop to support older adults across the area. With several convenient collection points and an online wish list, it is easier than ever to take part and brighten someone’s Christmas.

Where you can drop off gifts

We have set up multiple locations across Tyne Valley for anyone who would like to donate:

– Swalwell Community Centre

– Home Instead Tyne Valley Office in Horsley

– Tyne Valley Garden Centre

– Amazon Wish List: Click HERE.

Gifts donated online via Amazon will be sent straight to us. We will be delivering the gifts to Swalwell Community Centre on 11 December.

Every donation, no matter how small, helps us reach more people who may not receive a gift otherwise.

Why small gifts make a big difference

Thoughtful presents create moments of connection at a time when many older adults feel overlooked. A small gesture can:

  • Lift someone’s mood over the festive season
  • Offer comfort to a person spending Christmas alone
  • Show appreciation to those who have contributed so much to their community
  • Help build stronger connections between generations in Tyne Valley

It is not about expensive gifts. It is about reminding someone that they are not forgotten.

What kinds of gifts are useful?

If you are not sure what to give, here are some simple, practical ideas that are always appreciated:

Comfort items

– Warm socks or gloves

– Scarves, blankets, or hot water bottles

– Soft slippers

Treats and small luxuries

– Biscuits, chocolates, or mince pies

– Speciality teas or hot chocolate

– Hand cream or bath products

Practical gifts

– Notebooks or calendars for the new year

– Puzzle books, pens, or reading lights

– Mugs, coasters, or small home accessories

Please leave gifts unwrapped so that we can match them appropriately before distribution.

How Tyne Valley residents can get involved

Supporting the Christmas gift drop is simple. You can:

  • Pick up a small gift during your next shop and drop it at any collection point
  • Order directly from the Amazon wish list
  • Encourage friends, neighbours or local groups to take part
  • Share our collection points on social media to help spread the word

Even one gift can make a huge difference. When many people contribute, we can reach far more older adults across the Tyne Valley community.
