7 Questions You Must Ask Before Choosing a Home Care Provider

If you’re researching home care, you’ll quickly find that most providers say roughly the same things. ‘Compassionate.’ ‘Person-centred.’ ‘Reliable.’ It’s hard to know what actually separates one from another — until something goes wrong.
These seven questions cut through the marketing and get to what really matters. Ask them of every provider you speak to.
1. Are your carers directly employed by you?
Some agencies introduce you to self-employed carers but take no responsibility for their conduct or consistency. A directly employed carer means the agency has real accountability — they’ve vetted, trained, and are accountable for that person.

2. Will my loved one have the same carer regularly?
Continuity matters enormously — both for practical reasons (carers who know the person, the home, the routine) and for emotional wellbeing. Ask specifically: what percentage of visits are delivered by the same carer? What happens when that carer is ill or on holiday?

3. What does your background checking process involve?
Every reputable provider runs DBS checks. But ask what else they do: reference verification, face-to-face interviews, values-based assessment, ongoing supervision. The quality of vetting varies significantly.

4. Can I speak to a current client or their family?
Any confident provider should be able to arrange this. If they hesitate or deflect, take note. First-hand accounts from families in a similar situation to yours are worth more than any marketing.

5. What is your full pricing — in writing, before we start?
Hidden charges are unfortunately common in care: minimum hours, bank holiday uplifts, administration fees, mileage charges. Ask for a full written breakdown before you commit to anything. A reputable provider will give it to you without hesitation.

6. How quickly can care begin?
In a non-crisis situation, this matters less. But it’s a useful indicator of how well-organised a provider is. A well-run service should be able to complete an assessment same-day and have care in place within 72 hours if needed.

7. What happens when things need to change?
Needs change. A good provider builds flexibility into their model — no punishing contract terms, a straightforward process for adjusting hours or the care plan, and a named contact person who knows your family.
