5 spots for a Cream Tea in Taunton and Wellington

Next time you are out with an older relative or friend, why not pop into one of our favourite places for a cuppa and cake, as recommended by our clients and care professionals

Miles Tea Room

Most popular amongst our clients and care professionals is the independent Mr Miles Tea Room in central Taunton.

Here you can treat yourself to a full breakfast, lunch, homemade cake, or an afternoon tea.  On site is a gift shop that sells locally produced coffee as well as a fantastic range of teas, infusions, and top-quality ceramics.

From the greeting at the door to the decor, everything is done to the highest of standards. You can expect a warm welcome from the team who are diligently attentive to the customers’ needs. The menu offers something for everyone, from the finest global brews to a beautifully decorated Latté.

Inside the tearoom you will find a cosy ambience, and in favourable weather the outside seating area has a continental charm.

Located on the pedestrianised High Street, you can find Mr Miles Tea Room here.

Elm Tree Restaurant – Monkton Elm Garden Centre

Sat in the heart of Monkton Elm Garden Centre overlooking their display of plants, sits the Elm Tree Restaurant. This is an eatery that is bursting with family favourites. Whether it’s the delicious full English, the much-loved beef carvery, traditional fish and chips, the chef’s daily specials, or the famous jam and fresh cream scones, you will not come away disappointed.

We think the cream teas here are exceptional. Expect to feast your eyes on a delicious selection of finger sandwiches, savoury snacks, mouth-watering desserts and two of the most perfect scones served with clotted cream and jam. The only decision up for dispute is whether you put cream or jam on first.

All hot meals are cooked to order, with vegan and dairy free options available.

With ample parking you can find Monkton Elm Garden Centre here.

Rumwell Farm Shop

It is not surprising that the award winning Rumwell café between Taunton and Wellington, is a favourite of our clients and care professionals. The family run business has a large spacious cafe that serves daily breakfasts, lunches, and afternoon teas. Dietary needs are catered for well, with gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options available. It is also reassuring to know that all the food prepared in the café kitchen is sourced from the farm shop, the family farm and other local producers and suppliers.

There is plenty of on-site parking and it is hard to resist the huge array of delicious foods on sale in the farm shop. It is great to see that Rumwell cafe has just been named runner up Large Farm Shop of the Year 2023 by the National Farm Retail Awards.

The site is wheelchair accessible, and we love the fact that the cafe team have all recently undertaken dementia training to ensure they can provide a specialist service to any customers who require it.

We sample the food regularly and it is excellent, but equally the standard of service is amazing, friendly, and fun!

Based on the Wellington Road, you can find Rumwell here.

Castle Bow – The Castle Hotel

For something truly decadent, visit the beautiful Castle Bow, set within the Castle hotel.  This is a special local landmark in Taunton as the stone structure of the Castle Bow  dates back to the 13th Century. Of particular historical interest, on the 20th June 1685, the Duke of Monmouth, illegitimate son of Charles II, arrived in Taunton to proclaim himself King. Needless to say, his ambition was thwarted when he lost the battle of Sedgemoor a few weeks later.

This beautiful art deco setting feels like the quintessential spot to have afternoon tea. You will be served a selection of dainty finger sandwiches, freshly baked warm scones with Somerset clotted cream and jam, delicious homemade cakes and pastries made in the in-house Patisserie. If you are treating yourselves, why not add a touch of sparkle with a glass of champagne!

Although there is parking outside the hotel, it can be limited so our Care Professionals recommend parking at Castle Street Car Park or Enfield Car Park. From there, it is a short walk following the river Tone to the Castle Green.
