Home Instead's review of local garden centres with advice on facilities and ease of access for older garden lovers.
Spring is in the air, the days are getting longer and spring bulbs are all around brightening up even the darkest corners. For so many people old and young the start of spring brings a new sense of life, hope and energy. During lockdown thousands of people discovered gardening for the first time, whilst other seasoned gardeners embraced more time to devote to their hobby. Growing things, be it in a garden, patio container or windowsill, brings a sense of hope, purpose and satisfaction which can be enjoyed by everyone even if you are confined to a chair. Take a trip to one of these garden centres in and around Hagley for some inspiration, sights and scents. It is always a popular excursion with elderly friends and family, so make it the highlight of the week for someone you care about.
Madeley Road, Belbroughton, Stourbridge, DY9 9XA
An independent, traditional Garden Centre and Nursery established for over 30 years. Many customers, parents and grandparents have stocked their gardens with plants from this nursery – why not bring them along for a trip down memory lane and enjoy the stories it will bring back to them. Beechcroft is proud of its vast range and diverse selection of plants, shrubs and trees giving inspiration and fresh horticultural ideas to experienced and novice gardeners alike. One thing that most gardeners have in common is not just a love of gardening but sharing their years of experience both successes and challenges so a great place to bring along an enthusiast from days gone by and let some green fingered magic rub off.
With easy access from villages such as Clent and Romsley to the bigger areas of Hagley and Halesowen take a short trip into the beautiful Worcestershire countryside. The main car park is across the road although there is a pull up space by the entrance. There may not be a café (there are toilets on site) the range, prices and quality make up for that for those whose aim is to brighten up their garden space or windowsill. The friendly knowledgeable staff are willing to carry and load any purchases into your car (or up the short level slope), and if unloading is a concern why not go along with your Home Instead Care Assistant and they will carefully unload at your home – then you can have fun planting together.
Isn’t that part of the joy of a trip to the garden centre – it brightens up spaces for weeks and months to come?

There are lots of choices to brighten the home and garden – plants and flowers are known to help with well-being and can bring joy often reigniting memories of times past. As well as all things gardening, Webbs offers an enjoyable shopping experience whether you are looking for a special gift, tasty treats to take home, books to lose yourself in and more. There is a café where you can choose breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.
