Home Instead Care aiming to connect seniors with local activities in Belbroughton

Homecare can bring health benefits for seniors.

Staying active has many health benefits at all ages but particularly as we get older as adults, it can reduce the risk of serious conditions such as diabetes, strokes, breast cancer, bowel cancer and heart disease.  The scientific evidence is beyond doubt regarding physical health but it is also proven to have many benefits for mental health and wellbeing too, so whilst our care assistants encourage independence within the home, at Home Instead we are keen to highlight all the great clubs and activities that are available to help people to stay active and living well in their own home.  In this article we are  focus on the village of Belbroughton.

Sports Clubs in Belbroughton

For those who are looking for a traditional sport, Belbroughton has a lot to offer for a small village.  The Cricket Club has a growing membership for all ages including a ‘strollers’ team and a mixed team.  Set on the edge of the village it also has a sociable club house and a great view across the fields!  Another club for all ages and abilities is the Belbroughton Tennis Club which has dedicated social groups which enhance general wellbeing as well as competitive teams.  Recent upgrades in a new surface and floodlights mean that tennis in Belbroughton is now a year-round sport, not just for the summer months.  If you prefer your physical activity sitting down there is also an annual bike ride, but it isn’t for the faint hearted – it’s a 135km Gran Fondo in the Worcestershire and Shropshire hills!

Combining good care to maintain strength

If these sound a bit too strenuous, there are other activities which are just as much fun and still bring significant benefits, helping to maintain strength and reduce muscle loss in ageing, which for many people can reduce the risk of falls and potential hospitalisation.  For more information about this ‘deconditioning’ effect, see this NHS blog.

Gentle exercise in Belbroughton to supplement good care and independence at home

One activity which can have significant benefits for strength and flexibility is Yoga which takes place at Belbroughton Church Hall which has sessions from Sarah Hunter Yoga and Kate Duncan Yoga.  Other activities at the Church Hall include Taekwondo and Pilates, whilst Belbroughton Recreation Centre has Pilates and Indoor Mat Bowls.

Care Givers helping with short walks in Belbroughton

Of course, if you just fancy a walk in the fresh air, walking also has proven benefits to health and Belbroughton is blessed with many footpaths which criss-cross the village, making it a favourite destination for ramblers, dog walkers and bird watchers.  Home Instead Care Givers are very happy to join their clients (and dogs) on walks and we have had many successes gradually building up distances for dome clients, even for some who without care and support were very nervous to simply leave the house.

Pub walks in Belbroughton

Whatever your level of activity, there is plenty to keep you moving and with 3 pubs, there are plenty of places to rest with a hot or cold drink afterwards.  Find the pub websites here:    https://www.yeoldehorseshoebelbroughton.co.uk/https://thetalbotbelbroughton.co.uk/https://belbroughton.club/   Watch this space for more information on those!
