Gary and Les with the Dominoes!
Gary and Les with the Dominoes!

Gary Wells, the Community Development Officer for Home Instead Senior Care Stockport donated a set of Visual Impairment Dominos to Les Whalley of Brereton Court in Cheadle, Stockport. It came about when Gary visited Brereton Court and spoke with Cath who is a resident/Volunteer. She told him about a resident; Les who is in his nineties and has a visual impairment. She told Gary that he wanted to play Dominos, but couldn’t play due to his eyesight. Cath asked if Gary could find some Dominos that would help Les to be able to continue to play.

Using his numerous contacts in the community, Gary contacted Walthew House. Walthew House is an independent local charity supporting people in Stockport who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing or who have dual sensory loss. The charity is named after John Walthew, who founded the charity in 1882. On 7th July 2009 Walthew House and Stockport Centre for the Deaf merged. Gary talked to them about his dilemma and they confirmed that they could provide a set of Dominoes for the visually impaired. Gary purchased these from them and arranged to drop by and donate them to Les.

Cath was over the moon when Gary called in with the Dominos. Cath said: “Les has no excuse now; he can carry on playing”. She thanked Gary for donating the Dominos for Les. Gary said: “It gives me a great feeling to be able to help someone continue playing a game that they have enjoyed over many years, but now can’t play due to visual impairment. It was fantastic to see Les’s face when I gave him the dominoes, it was a joy to watch”. The dominoes have raised numbers so people with a visual impairment can use touch to play the game.

The dominoes are just one of the many ways that the staff at Walthew House can help people overcome everyday obstacles and help them live a better life. For more information about the support they provide to people with sensory impairment, please visit:
