A walk in the park

I had been in customer service for the over 10 years. When my son was 3 years old he was diagnosed with autism and I had to learn to be more understanding and patient. Qualities that go perfectly with being a CAREGiver. During this time I learnt something that I am 100% good at, and that is caring for people.

So when I saw Home Instead were advertising for CAREGivers I decided to put myself to the test and go for a complete career change. It has been the best decision I have ever made for myself.

My first call and client was a lady called Sheila. We instantly clicked and bounced off each other. Sheila had not long been out of a care home and was very unsteady on her feet. This meant that she wasn't able to get out of the house! Sheila always used to talk to me about how she walked to the bridge near her house and she had not been there for ages. So over the next few weeks we did a few walks up and down her house to build up her strength. As well as wonderful chats and coffees.

Then came the day we were to go outside and take this walk to the bridge that she hadn't seen in years! It was going to be a challenge, but Sheila was ready and I was there to support her. With a determined look on her face Sheila managed it and she was so happy. The beam on her face is something I will never forget. From then on we went for more and more walks and eventually went out for coffees and strolls through the garden centre.

Sheila is my regular client and I look forward to our time together at every call. To me those moments are cherished as much as the day my son was born.  I instantly knew this was the job for me because I know I can make a difference to someone else's life which also makes a big difference to mine to! I have never been in care work before and I finally feel like I am doing a job I love and enjoy.

I received a Daisy Dignity in Care Award for the work I have done with Sheila but Sheila also shared this reward with me as she deserves it as much as I do.  All my clients are lovely, amazing individuals and all with different needs. After each call I go away with a smile on my face because helping someone even do the littlest of things is just so rewarding.
