Training and Development - The Home Instead Way

We take great when selecting people to be Home Instead Care Professionals and then we train them and then we keep training them...

Here at Home Instead in St Albans we recruit from St Albans and surrounding areas such as Harpenden, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, London Colney and further afield to Garston, Radlett and Abbotts Langley.  We recruit from every walk of life.  We can do this because of the excellent hands-on training and competency monitoring and support  we provide our recruits.

When a new Care Professional starts with us, they are invited to attend a learning and Development Programme.  This lasts for 4 days and covers an Induction to Home Instead, ensuring that all staff are aware of our policy and procedures and have received a good orientation to Home Instead St Albans. We also train staff in Manual Handling, Medication Administration, Basic Life Support and all elements of Personal Care.

Learning & Development

As well as the excellent in-house training provided during our Learning and Development course, we support our staff in the field and conduct competency assessments to ensure safety and best practices are being followed when administering medication, using equipment and delivering care to our clients.  We ensure all new employees achieve the Care Certificate, which is an industry recognised qualification, and provides evidence that staff are competent to deliver support. We do this by performing a series of knowledge checks and observations. Staff are deemed to have achieved the Care Certificate when all elements of the 15 standards have been met and evidenced.

Continuing Staff Development

At Home Instead St Albans we believe strongly that continuing staff development during their employment journey is the key to the outstanding support we and our staff are proud to provide.  We also offer a City and Guilds accredited course in Dementia.  This course provides an understanding of how to support a client and their families, ensuring that care is delivered with positivity and engagement, so that our clients can achieve the most from their daily lives.  This course is delivered over 9 hours of classroom study.  We also offer our staff a City and Guilds accredited course in End-of-Life Care.  This course enables a member of staff to support a client and their families at a difficult time, with professional competence, care and compassion> This course is delivered over 15 hours in the classroom.

A Blended Approach

Our training is delivered in workshops and gives staff the opportunity to discuss any queries or concerns they may have. We also offer in-house training in communication, oral care, sepsis, mindfulness, and self-care. Our Care Professionals also have access to an eLearning platform that includes many interesting topics and enables Home Instead St Albans to tailor our client’s Care Professionals knowledge to any specialised needs that a client may have.  We also provide our staff with annual refresher mandatory sessions such as Manual Handling, Safeguarding of Adults and Medication administration.
