A flexible way to stay independent at home

Private care at home means planned visits from a Home Instead Care Professional at times that fit with usual routines. Support is tailored to the individual, so no two care plans look exactly the same. For some people this is mainly companionship and a bit of help around the house. For others it includes more hands-on Personal Care or specialist Dementia Care as part of wider Care at Home.

Private care at home can be helpful when, for example:

  • Someone is beginning to struggle with washing, dressing or preparing meals but wants to stay in their own home.

  • A partner or family member is providing a lot of support and is becoming tired or worried about managing on their own.

  • There are concerns about falls, confusion, missed medication or unopened post.

  • A person has become more isolated after losing a partner or giving up driving and would value regular company and encouragement.

  • Private care at home is flexible. It can begin with shorter visits to ease into support and can increase or change focus if health, confidence or circumstances change over time.

How we plan and deliver support

When you get in touch, we start with a simple conversation about your situation and what you are noticing day to day. If you would like to explore things further, a member of the team will arrange a home visit to understand routines, health conditions, interests and what a good day looks like for you or your loved one.

From there, we put together a care plan that can bring together several types of support:

  • Companionship Care for conversation, shared interests and time together, such as chatting over a cup of tea, doing a jigsaw, baking, going for a gentle stroll or keeping up with favourite hobbies.

  • Home Help with light housework, laundry, changing beds, meal preparation, washing up and help with shopping or collecting prescriptions, so the home feels safe, tidy and organised.

  • Care at Home visits at agreed times during the day, evening or weekend. A visit might include morning help with washing and dressing, a midday call with a prepared meal and medication prompts, or an unhurried evening visit to support a calm bedtime routine.

  • Dementia Care for those living with memory loss or confusion, using clear, calm communication, familiar routines and activities that draw on long term memories.

  • Personal Care such as washing, bathing or showering, dressing and continence care, always handled with respect for privacy, dignity and individual preferences.

  • You choose the pattern of visits that suits you. As needs change, we review the care plan with you and can adjust the times, length of visits or type of support so it stays relevant.

Care Professionals and the relationships they build

Care Professionals are at the heart of private care at home. We look for people who are patient, reliable and genuinely interested in others. They receive thorough training before supporting people in their homes and ongoing guidance so they can provide safe, thoughtful care.

A Care Professional will:

  • Arrive when expected and take time to get to know the person, not just the list of tasks.

  • Offer Personal Care in a calm, unhurried way, always protecting dignity, privacy and independence.

  • Encourage the person to do what they can for themselves, stepping in where extra help is needed or requested.

  • Keep in touch with the office and, with permission, with family members, so everyone understands how things are going.

  • Continuity matters, so we aim for regular visits from familiar faces wherever possible. Families can also see independent feedback on our service through our profile on homecare.co.uk, where we are rated 9.8 out of 10.

Everyday examples of support in action

Here are some different ways private care at home can make a difference in day to day life.

Keeping up with appointments and routines

A woman who has always been organised starts missing appointments and feels nervous about travelling alone. A Care Professional visits twice a week to help her look through the calendar, prepare any paperwork she needs and accompany her to local appointments. On other days, shorter visits focus on Home Help, such as sorting post and preparing simple meals, so she feels more settled and on top of things.

Supporting someone after a change in mobility

After a knee operation, an older man finds it hard to manage stairs and everyday tasks. Private care at home provides planned Care at Home visits that include Personal Care support with washing and dressing, help to move safely around the home, and Companionship Care while he carries out gentle exercises suggested by his therapists. The Care Professional also prepares meals and makes sure drinks are within reach, helping his recovery feel safer and less overwhelming.

Encouraging social connection at home and nearby

A lady who lives alone has lost confidence going out but misses chatting with others. A regular Care Professional visits several times a week for Companionship Care, bringing ideas for simple activities such as card games, looking through recipe books together or tending to plants. On some visits, they walk to a nearby shop or cafe, building confidence step by step so she can enjoy a bit of time outside again.

Frequently asked questions about Private care at home

How quickly can private care at home start?

This depends on what kind of support is needed and how many visits are required. The team will talk with you about your situation, explain what is realistic and agree a start date. In some cases support can begin with a small number of visits and then increase once everyone feels comfortable with the routine.

Can family members be involved if they live some distance away?

Yes. Family members who live further away can still be closely involved in planning and reviewing support. With permission, the office team can keep in touch by phone or email to share updates, discuss any changes and review the care plan together, so everyone feels informed and included.

What if my loved one is unsure about having someone new in their home?

It is common for people to feel unsure about accepting help. The team will take time to understand any worries and explain how visits work. Whenever possible, the Care Professional can be introduced gradually, perhaps starting with shorter visits focused on conversation or Home Help. Over time, as trust builds, support can gently increase if needed.
