Understanding Dementia

Dementia is not a single disease, but a group of symptoms caused by different conditions that affect the brain. The most common form is Alzheimer’s disease, though there are many others, including vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia. It can affect memory, communication, reasoning, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

In Cumbria, around 7,800 people aged 65 and over are currently living with dementia. That number is expected to rise by 47.7% by 2040, putting even greater pressure on families, carers, and health services. Despite its growing prevalence, around 36% of people living with dementia remain undiagnosed, meaning many are missing out on vital support and guidance.

Why This Day Matters

A diagnosis of dementia can be overwhelming—for the individual and for their loved ones. Families often feel confused, isolated, and unsure where to turn. That’s why we’re bringing the community together for Dementia Awareness Day—to provide a space for learning, connection, and support.

This event is not only for those directly affected by dementia—it’s for anyone who wants to better understand the condition and learn how to support others in their community.

Experience the Virtual Dementia Tour

One of the key features of the day is the Virtual Dementia Tour, a scientifically designed experience that simulates what it might feel like to live with dementia. It’s an incredibly eye-opening journey that helps people gain empathy and insight, and it’s helped countless families and carers better understand their loved ones.

Because this experience is so popular, we recommend booking your slot in advance to avoid disappointment.

See the Impact – Watch Last Year’s Testimonials

Not sure what to expect? Take a look at the testimonial video from last year’s event, where participants shared how the Virtual Dementia Tour and the day as a whole gave them a deeper understanding and valuable support. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re proud to build on that success this year.

Local Support and Resources

Throughout the day, we’ll be joined by local dementia support groups and healthcare professionals, who will be on hand to share information about services available in the South Lakeland and wider Cumbria area.

We’ll also be providing free information packs filled with helpful resources, contact details, and guidance to take home.

Free Health Checks with the HARRI Bus & Whzan Box

The HARRI Bus (Health, Advice, Recovery, Resilience, Information) will be on-site offering free health checks, including blood pressure checks and wellbeing advice.

This year, we’re also introducing the Whzan box, a portable digital health monitoring system. It allows us to take quick readings of your blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels, and temperature, helping you stay on top of your health in a simple and accessible way.

A Community Gathering

The day will also include live performances from local school choirs, bringing joy and music to the atmosphere. And of course, Beetham Nurseries is a lovely spot to enjoy refreshments and spend time with friends and family.

Whether you’re looking for guidance, community, or just a better understanding of dementia, this event is for you.

Let’s Stand Together

As the number of people affected by dementia continues to grow, it’s more important than ever to talk about it, share knowledge, and support each other. By coming together for Dementia Awareness Day, we can build a more informed, compassionate community.

We look forward to welcoming you on the 17th of September—please help us spread the word and make this day meaningful for everyone.
