Our Care Professionals love taking our clients out for a cup of tea and slice of cake! In fact, we are spoiled for choice here in the Lake District, with so many superb cafés!
Hansens Café in Kendal is a firm favourite with many of our clients and Care Professionals. It’s easy to get to, with plenty of parking and a lovely outdoor seating area. In addition to their selection of teas and coffees, you can treat yourself to delicious homemade cakes and amazing ice cream which is made on the premises! (We particularly like the ice cream sundaes!) They also do fabulous lunches, light snacks, and the best Sunday roasts. Hansens also hosts a weekly meeting of the local Parkinson’s group.
“I love Hansens. The food and ice cream are yummy, and the staff are so friendly.”

Located around 5 miles out of Kendal, Levens Kitchen opened a few years ago, and has already won several major awards including the ‘Great Place to Eat, UK Heritage Awards 2020’. They cook and bake using locally-sourced, high-quality produce, including products grown on their own estate and in the gardens of Levens Hall. Everything on the menu is homemade, and you can purchase an array of teas, coffees, cakes, and lunches, as well as some lovely breakfast options. Dating back to the 1690s, the acres of gardens largely remain unchanged, and Levens Hall itself has an interesting history, making it a favourite place to visit for many of our local clients!
Situated in Beetham Nurseries, this lovely café is a perfect place to have a cup of tea, a snack, or a main meal after exploring the Garden Centre and Growing Nursery. On warmer days you can eat outside on the patio, and it’s a wonderful place to sit and relax amid the sound of birdsong and scent of flowers. They have a wide range of choices on their menu from ‘Beetham rarebit’ and quiche-of-the-day to minted lamb hotpot, paninis, and – of course – plenty of scrumptious cakes. The only problem is that you may come away spending more than you thought, as there are so many wonderful plants to buy in the Garden Centre!
The pretty Victorian seaside town of Grange-over sands is home to many of our local clients, and as such, Hazelmere Café is a favourite spot for afternoon tea. Indeed, we often get asked by our clients if we can pick up some of their delicious cakes for them! It’s only a short stroll from the town’s Edwardian promenade, which offers stunning views across the flat sands of Morecambe Bay. The Hazelmere’s staff know a great deal about tea, which they personally source and match. They also have a bakery, which produces a range of their own breads, from Farmhouse whites to spelt & honey and beetroot & apple. They bake over thirty different cakes fresh each day, and they even make their own jams and chutneys!
The Two Sisters Café is another excellent spot for a cup of tea, located just off the A591 to the north of Kendal. This lovely café is to be found in Plumgarths, which is an independent, family-run farm and gift shop run by two lovely sisters. It’s a very friendly and welcoming café with a wood-burning fire to warm you up inside. There is also a small patio area for outside dining when the sun is shining! With a wonderful cake selection, there are lots of things to choose from, including scones, white chocolate, and raspberry cheesecake. The café also offers a traditional full English breakfast along with other lighter options and a variety of lunch options. They are also famous for their cream teas!
There are so many lovely cafés here in the Lake District that it was hard to choose just five! We do hope you pay some of them a visit!
