Ellie is an Adult Nursing Student at Sheffield Hallam University and has worked for Home Instead for just over a year. Keen to develop her people and communication skills during her nursing placements, Ellie applied to Home Instead for part time work.
Now in her final year of her nursing degree, Ellie shares how working in social care massively supported her nursing degree…
The whole reason I applied was because I was in my second year of my nursing degree and I wasn’t very confident on my placements with my people skills. Personal care was also new to me. But after starting at Home Instead, I gained experience in using rotundas and hoists, so when I encountered them during nursing I already knew how to use them and felt confident.
My confidence really improved the difference between how I felt during placements before and after working for Home Instead is crazy!
I found it a lot easier to talk to people – I recommend it 100% as it gets your foot in the door. I’m confident in medications and administrating them now due my experience with clients. So many aspects of what I’ve learnt as a Care Professional are reflected in my nursing – there’s a lot of overlap.
It worked well alongside my studies – Home Instead has made it easy, being super flexible and working around university. The workload was really balanced around my degree, which is quite a heavy course – they always asked me what I wanted and fitted hours around that.
Care sounds like a hard job, but I don’t find it draining. I consider the days where I’m just working and not on my degree placement to be my days off!
