Care professionals Ready For When You Need Respite

Being a full-time carer is a very demanding role and, for many Care professionals, self-care is often neglected. The strong sense of responsibility that comes with being an unpaid carer makes it easy to put off looking after one’s self. When we’re taking care of someone else, sometimes there’s not enough left over for ourselves – but eventually, things can take their toll.

When carers need a break, respite care is the perfect solution. Respite for carers offers a needed break for Care professionals who are often found in nursing homes. This type of care service provides temporary relief and benefits both the Care professional and their loved one.

Respite can be an invaluable experience for elderly people or people with disabilities. It offers an opportunity for a change of scenery and new social interaction. In addition, the increased activity has even been shown to help with loneliness and improve their quality of life. This can also have a positive impact on mental health.

At Home Instead Ruislip, we believe that everyone deserves a bit of time to themselves. That’s why we provide respite care; to give a much needed Respite Holiday to carers who need a break from time to time.

We provide this as part of our home care services in and around Ruislip, Harrow & relevant areas.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care services are designed to give you a break from caring for a family member or friend. There are different types of respite care options available that we can assist with to help give you regular breaks when you need them.

We understand that caring for another person can be physically and mentally demanding, especially when care is provided for long periods of time.

Our Care professionals can safely come to visit your home to look after the person you care for regularly. Our Care professionals can take them out for a walk, to an activity group or day centre for as little or as long as required.

The different types of respite care:

  • Live-in care – for the periods of time where you may require respite care, a carer lives in your house, offering support and company day and night. This allows you to stay in the familiar surroundings you are comfortable with and out of residential homes.
  • Visiting care – Temporary care if you only require a bit of extra support for just a few hours each day or each week.  We recommend this type of service for Short-term breaks.

Will respite care affect my carers allowance?

If you have time off from caring, there are special rules to decide whether you’ll continue to receive Carer’s Allowance. The basic rule is that you can continue to receive your Carer’s Allowance for up to four weeks in any six months if you have a break from caring.

However, the rules are complicated, so you should get specialist advice.

If you’re receiving any other benefits, including extra amounts for caring, these may be affected if you have a break from caring.
