It has been said that Life begins the day you start a garden!

Regardless of the weather, garden centres are best known to spend some quality and relaxing time to yourself and your thoughts, and give you peace and quiet while still being out and about. Their calm environment makes them ideal when you want to get out and have a potter around somewhere a bit calmer and quieter for your senior’s outing.
A lot of older people love gardening; From just a few pots on the windowsill, to full-on planting and growing, to taking seniors out to a local garden centre in Rugby, it can be a lovely outing that everyone can enjoy. Look at some of our recommendations below.

Barby Nursery

Located in the small village of Barby, they are easily accessible from the surrounding areas.
This is a family-run plant nursery and garden centre. Their plants are homegrown and consist of bedding plants, hanging baskets, and planters. They grow much of their seasonal bedding and basket plants on site, with round-the-clock care to ensure their plants are of the highest quality.
Barby Nurseries has a wonderful coffee shop, where you can treat yourself to a hot cup of tea or coffee and a delicious slice of cake, for a much-needed rest after looking at the variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials.
The Nursery prides itself on the large display of Japanese Acers and specimen shrubs.
With everything at your fingertips, from propagation and seeds, to gardening tools and compost, you shouldn’t need to go anywhere else.
Barby Nurseries is a true gardener’s paradise, a definite must-see.

Whilton Locks Garden Village

Just off the A5, you will find this treasure that is situated on the Warwickshire and Northampton border close to Daventry. This too is a family-run Garden Centre.
This lovely garden centre is also Wheelchair friendly and you can visit no matter what the weather.
Besides the Garden Centre, there is Bruno’s Pet store, they have animals onsite which range from hamsters to rabbits, birds to fish, and even reptiles!
If you are not up to seeing the animals there, is a wonderful Restaurant called the Canalside.
They hold different events throughout the year, so make sure you look them up and plan your visit.

The Garden Barn

Just a short distance away from our offices is a lovely family-run garden store and an amazing coffee shop. If you get the chance to take your seniors for a little outing near Lutterworth, this is definitely worth the drive.
The store is housed in what used to be the milking barn, and they have taken the time to handpick all the items in there which gives the place its element of charm.
When you are ready to sit and have a nice relaxing break after looking around this wonderful store, you can sit at the Café Bar which is situated in the heart of the store. Here you can get a drink of your choice and a homemade piece of cake. There are Vegan and Gluten Free options available. What is so lovely about this Café is that you can sit outside during the summer months, and in the winter months get nice and cosy with a log burner and blankets.

Rimo Growers

Formally known as Medda Place Nursery, Rimo Growers stock a range of herbaceous plants and shrubs and source some of their plants from local suppliers. What is great about Rimo is that they offer a plant-sourcing service for those hard-to-find plants and help source the plants for our avid gardeners, whom we all know some of our seniors are.
The shop sells pots for all your potting needs. Compost is a ready supply for all the seeds as well as bulbs.
Not only does this very helpful garden centre help with all your garden and plant needs, they also sell locally sourced honey, jams, and chutneys.
During the Christmas season, you can buy Christmas trees and wreaths, and seasonal gifts which are amazing! Unfortunately, there is no café on site, but they have thought of it all and you are able to get a hot drink from the drinks machine and other beverages too.
