The Extraordinary Qualities of a Live-In Care Professional: Could This Be You?

At Home Instead Reigate & Tandridge, we understand that exceptional live-in care is about far more than practical support, it’s about building relationships, enhancing well-being, and helping clients enjoy life to the fullest, all from the comfort of their own home.

If you’re considering a role in care, here’s what it takes to become a truly outstanding live-in Care Professional and how your proactive, compassionate approach could make a world of difference to someone’s life.

A Respect for Care Plans, Policies and Procedures

Every client has a bespoke care plan that guides their day-to-day support, and following it ensures we’re delivering safe, consistent care. A great Care Professional knows that safeguarding, medication procedure and daily routines are not just tasks, they’re the foundation of dignified, reliable care.

For example, ensuring the right medication, the right dose, the right person, the right time, the right route (oral etc), the right reason and the right documentation are all correct and tally with the care plan.

A Warm, Personable Approach

Live-in care means sharing a home with someone, so it’s essential to build a natural rapport. Clients are more than their needs, they are people with stories, routines, and interests, and it’s those personal connections that make the biggest difference.

This could be discovering a shared love of 60s music and starting the day with a favourite playlist that sparks conversation and smiles.

A Proactive Mindset

Being a live-in carer often means spotting the small things that others might miss. It’s about thinking ahead, noticing details, and gently making suggestions that enhance comfort and independence.

This could be noticing that the client struggles with the step into the garden and suggesting that the office arrange for a handyman to fit a small ramp, opening up the chance for a peaceful cup of tea outside.

A Focus on Wellbeing, Not Just Tasks

Great care isn’t just about what gets done, it’s about how someone feels. From meals to hobbies to simple joys, live-in carers often find ways to reintroduce meaning into everyday life.

This could be encouraging a client to pick up their knitting again with some chunkier needles, even if just for 10 minutes a day, to rebuild confidence and lift their spirits.

A Genuine Interest in the Person You Support

Clients have lived rich, varied lives, and they still have so much to share. Taking time to listen, reminisce, and connect creates a bond that’s often the most treasured part of care.

This could be chatting about a past career in gardening and together planting a few pots of herbs by the window to bring a sense of purpose and a lovely scent to the kitchen.

  • Excellent pay and benefits

  • Flexibility with the security of guaranteed hours contracts if desired

You’ll also be joining a team that puts people first, clients and Care Professionals alike.

What to Expect as a Live-In Care Professional

As a live-in Care Professional with Home Instead Reigate & Tandridge, you’ll provide support over a 24-hour period while maintaining a healthy balance of rest and downtime.

Each day typically includes around 10 hours of active care time, with a two-hour break during the day and 11 hours set aside for rest overnight. You may occasionally be on hand during the night if your client needs brief reassurance or assistance, but generally, you’ll have time to unwind and recharge.

For clients who have more complex needs, such as dementia and cannot be left alone, additional support is arranged. This could involve family members or another Care

Professional stepping in during your break and rest periods to ensure safety and continuity of care.

Importantly, working as a live-in carer doesn’t mean sacrificing your own space or privacy. If your client prefers a bit of quiet time with a newspaper or a cuppa, you’re free to enjoy your own downtime in another part of the home, respecting both your needs and theirs.

Most live-in placements operate on a two-week rotation, meaning you’ll alternate with another Care Professional. This not only ensures consistency for the client but also allows for a proper break and continuity of care when you’re off-duty.

You’ll always have the full support of our friendly office team, and you’ll be carefully matched with clients to ensure a good fit for both of you.
