Enjoyment from life over the last five years

A wonderful tribute from a son, whose mother we cared for for over five years, with special thanks to the caregivers she considered as friends.

We are most grateful to Mr. Guy who gave us permission to share this heartfelt email in full.

Dear Greg

I want to thank you and all of the team at Home Instead for the care that you gave mum over the more than five years that you were looking after her.

I know how much trouble you take to recruit the right people and it really shows. Mum frequently said that she considered all of the Home Instead caregivers to be friends, and how lucky she was that she had them coming in to see her.

Regardless of the reality, I’m not sure that Mum ever really recognised that she needed “care” as such, but at the most basic level she very much enjoyed the companionship that the caregivers brought each day and she really appreciated how everyone looked after her and was really caring towards her.

Mum’s house and her garden were very important to her and I am confident that it gave her an enormous amount of pleasure to be able to carry on living in her own home and to be able to look out of the window at the garden that she had tended for so many years. “Home Instead” is more than just a slogan; it really does have meaning for people like Mum.

After her fall I honestly believed that Mum would rally if only we could get her home from hospital. Ultimately she didn’t pick up the way that I had hoped, but I’m sure that she knew that she was back at home and this was important to all of us.

I also know that it wouldn’t have been possible to get her home when we did, without the effort that Nancy put in at incredibly short notice to revise the schedule, and the willingness and flexibility of the care professionals to accommodate our new requirements.

By chance, the geriatric consultant at East Surrey had come out to assess mum when she was unwell back in 2018 at about the time that I first got in touch with yourself, and she remembered Mum.

The consultant’s comment was that considering how frail mum had been back then, she was quite surprised that Mum was still going strong five years later and in her view this really showed how well mum had been looked after over that time.

It is in large part thanks to your team that Mum was so well looked after and that she got so much enjoyment from life over the last five years.

Thank you

Alan
