Home Instead Redbridge & Walthamstow mark World Alzheimer’s Month 2025 with care, stories & support.
Every September, communities around the world come together for World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to talk openly about dementia, raise awareness, and take action. Here in Redbridge and Walthamstow, our team at Home Instead is proud to be part of this movement by sharing personal stories, attending local events, and supporting families every step of the way. From the voices of our Care Professionals to the experiences of those receiving care, this month is about shining a light on the people behind the diagnosis and showing that with compassion, understanding, and the right support, we can change the story of dementia together.
In this blog, we’ll share how our team is marking World Alzheimer’s Month in Redbridge and Walthamstow, from community events and awareness activities to the local stories that inspire us every day. You’ll also find practical ways to get involved and make a difference this September.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and remains the leading cause of death in the UK. Yet it is still too often misunderstood. Dementia is not an inevitable part of growing older, it’s a progressive brain disease that slowly affects memory, language, reasoning and daily independence. And it doesn’t just affect older people: symptoms can appear in people as young as their 40s.
Despite the scale of the condition, dementia is often left out of national conversations around healthcare, social support, and funding. The aim of World Alzheimer’s Month is to change that, and at Home Instead Redbridge & Walthamstow, we’re proud to stand with others calling for change.
Understanding the scale of the issue is one part of the picture. These figures highlight the scale of the challenge:
This is why World Alzheimer’s Month isn’t just symbolic; it’s necessary.
Here at Home Instead Redbridge & Walthamstow, we believe that real awareness begins with everyday actions, with conversations at the dinner table, walks in the park, and compassionate care behind closed doors.
Our team is marking the month with a series of local initiatives. Staff members will be wearing purple throughout September to show solidarity with those affected by dementia.
If you visit our office in September, you’ll see displays with information from the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Friends. And we’ll be encouraging local residents to come in and talk to us if they have any questions, no pressure, no referrals, just a friendly chat with someone who understands.
Do you have a story to share about your experience with dementia? Whether you’re a family carer or someone receiving care, we’d love to hear from you. Our goal this month is to publish local voices on our website and social channels, because personal stories help reduce stigma and bring others the comfort of knowing they’re not alone.
Whether you’ve been affected by dementia personally or not, there are many ways you can get involved and help raise awareness throughout World Alzheimer’s Month.
A simple yet powerful initiative from the Alzheimer’s Society, becoming a Dementia Friend helps you understand how dementia affects people and what small actions you can take to make life easier for someone living with the condition. Our team at Home Instead are proud Dementia Friends, and we’d encourage others across Redbridge and Walthamstow to join too.
Look out for Memory Walks taking place across London and Essex during September. These sponsored walks are a way to honour loved ones, raise funds, and connect with others who understand what dementia care really involves.
We’ll be announcing which events our team will be attending on our social media, so you can come along and join us. Bring your friends, family, and walking shoes.
Use hashtags like #WorldAlzheimersMonth and #SupportAlz to share informative posts, graphics, or personal reflections. Even one story can make a difference.
As a home care provider, we see the impact of Alzheimer’s disease every day, not just on those diagnosed, but on their partners, children, and friends. One of the most common things we hear from families is: “I didn’t know where to start.”
That’s where we come in. At Home Instead Redbridge & Walthamstow, we provide home care services tailored to people living with dementia, from early-stage support to more advanced needs. Whether it’s help with medication, preparing meals, managing routines, or simply offering companionship, we believe in care that prioritises dignity, understanding and consistency.
We also help families navigate the complexities of legal and financial planning, signpost to local memory clinics and community groups, and offer respite services when carers need a break.
If you or someone close to you has recently received a diagnosis, or you’re concerned about signs of memory loss, support is available.
Here are some helpful resources we regularly recommend:
And of course, you’re always welcome to contact us directly for a friendly conversation. We’ll listen, help where we can, and connect you to the right support.
While World Alzheimer’s Month gives us a powerful platform, we know the work doesn’t stop on 30 September. Dementia is an ongoing journey for individuals and families” or “Dementia is a journey that requires ongoing understanding and support, and awareness needs to be sustained all year round.
Here at Home Instead Redbridge & Walthamstow, we’re committed to:
World Alzheimer’s Month is a reminder that dementia is not just a medical condition; it’s a human experience. The stories, challenges, and care needs are all around us, often hidden behind closed doors. But by opening those doors, starting conversations, and offering support without judgement, we can help create a more understanding and dementia-aware community.
Whether you choose to walk, share, donate, or simply ask someone how they’re doing, you’re part of the change.
Let’s make Redbridge & Walthamstow a place where no one feels alone in the face of dementia.
