Safer Internet Day - Tuesday 10th February

This Tuesday 10th February, we’re supporting Safer Internet Day, an annual awareness day that encourages everyone to use the internet and digital technology safely, confidently and responsibly.

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke, we see everyday how technology can enrich lives. From video calling loved ones and ordering shopping online, to managing appointments and accessing information, the internet offers many benefits. However, as technology continues to evolve, it’s natural for some people – especially older adults – to feel unsure or cautious.

This year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices – exploring the responsible use of AI’, is all about understanding new technology and using it in a way that keeps us safe and in control.

What is AI and how is it used?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to technology that can perform tasks that normally require human thinking. While it sounds very technical, many people already use AI in everyday life, often without realising it.

Common Examples Include:

  • Voice assistants such as Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant
  • Email systems that filter out spam messages
  • Online shopping or TV services that suggest products or programmes you might like
  • Automated customer service chats or phone systems

Used well, AI can save time, make life easier and help people to stay independent. But, like any technology, it needs to be used carefully.

How AI can be used in scams

Unfortunately, scammers are also using AI to make fraud more convincing. This is why awareness is so important.

Some examples include:

  • Very realistic emails or messages that look like they are from a bank, delivery company, or even a family member
  • Phone calls with convincing voices, sometimes pretending to be from trusted organisations
  • Fake messages that create urgency, such as claiming there’s a problem with your account or that money is owed

AI can help scammers to write messages that sound polite, professional and believable, but that doesn’t mean that they are genuine.

Staying Safe: Simple steps that really help

You don’t need to be an expert to stay safe online. A few simple habits can reduce your stress significantly:

Take your time

Scammers often try to rush people. If a message or call pressures you to act quickly, that’s a warning sign. It’s always ok to stop and think.

Never share personal details

Banks, doctors and trusted organisations will never ask for passwords, PIN numbers or full bank details by emails or unexpected phone calls.

Check with someone you trust

If you’re unsure about a message, link or request for money, speak to a family member, friend or caregiver before responding.

Trust your instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. It’s better to ignore a message than respond and regret it later.

You’re not alone with technology

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke we understand that technology can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our Care Professionals are there to provide reassurance and practical support, whether that’s helping with a mobile phone, setting up video calls, or simply talking through concerns about online safety.

Safer internet day is a reminder that confidence comes from support  and understanding, not from knowing everything. With the right help, smart technology can be used safely and positively.

If you or a loved one would benefit from support at home, including help with everyday technology, the team at Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke would be delighted to help.

Let’s make smart choices, stay safe online, and use technology in a way that truly supports independence and peace of mind.
