Last week, Home Instead Newcastle-Under-Lyme proudly hosted a Dementia Bus Event, and we are still buzzing from the success of the day. It was a truly inspiring experience that brought together a wide range of people and organisations, all united by a common goal: to better understand dementia and to improve the lives of those living with it.

What is the Dementia Bus?

The Dementia Bus is a unique, interactive experience designed to simulate what it’s like to live with dementia. It offers participants a chance to walk in the shoes of someone living with the condition, helping to build empathy, understanding and ultimately more compassionate care and support.

A True Community Effort

We were thrilled to welcome a diverse group of attendees throughout the day, from healthcare professionals and care providers to members of the general public, all eager to learn more and engage with the experience.

Among our guests were:

  • Representatives from Dougie Mac Hospice
  • Members of the local Police force
  • Social Prescribers from across the area
  • Our local MP, showing support for dementia initiatives in the community
  • Our dedicated Home Instead Office Team
  • Passionate Care Professionals
  • And many members of the public, curious and open to learning more about the dementia experience

Seeing so many different sectors come together, reminded us of how powerful community collaboration can be when it comes to tackling such an important issue.

Expert Guidance on the Day

A key part of the events success was the on-site support and guidance provided by experts in the field of dementia.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Admiral Nurse from Dementia UK  as well as the Dementia Advisors from the Alzheimer’s Society, who were present on the day to offer:

  • Personalised advice for families and carers
  • Professional guidance for those working in health and social care
  • Signposting to local services and support options
  • Emotional support and a listening ear for anyone affected by dementia

Their input was invaluable and greatly appreciated by everyone who attended. Dementia touches the lives of so many people, yet there’s still a lack of understanding around what it truly means to live with the condition. Events like our Dementia Bus experience are vital for breaking down stigma, raising awareness, and equipping our community with the knowledge and empathy to make a difference.

Whether it’s a family member caring for a loved one, a professional supporting clients in their role, or someone simply wanting to learn more, everyone who took part walked away with a deeper understanding and a renewed sense of purpose.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud to have hosted such a meaningful event and are committed to continuing our work in supporting those living with dementia in our community. This is just one of the many steps we’ll be taking toward building a more informed, compassionate and dementia-friendly future.

A huge thank you once again to everyone who attended and contributed to the day, your support makes all the difference. If you’d like to find out more about dementia support , or upcoming events at Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
