Nutrition and Hydration Week 2026

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke we know that good nutrition and staying hydrated play a vital role in maintaining health, energy, and wellbeing as we age. That’s why we’re proud to support Nutrition and Hydration Week, a national initiative that highlights the importance of food and drink in care setting and at home.

For many older adults, eating well can become more challenging due to changes in appetite, mobility, or the ability to cook regularly. Our Care Professionals support clients every day with meal preparation, encouragement to eat and drink, and companionship at mealtimes, helping turn everyday meals into enjoyable moments.

Throughout the week, we’re celebrating different themes that encourage simple, nutritious choices. Here are some ideas you can try at home with a loved one.

Monday: Breakfast – Starting the Day Well

Breakfast really is one of the most important meals of the day. A balanced breakfast can help maintain energy levels, improve concentration, and set the tone for the day ahead.

Simple and nourishing breakfast ideas include:

  • Warm porridge with honey, berries, or banana
  • Wholegrain toast with scrambled eggs
  • Greek yoghurt with fruit and granola
  • A boiled egg with soldiers
  • A bowl of cereal with milk and sliced fruit

For many of our clients, having someone there to prepare breakfast and share a chat over a cup of tea makes all the difference to starting the day positively.

Tuesday: Snacks – Little and Often

Sometimes large meals can feel overwhelming, but smaller snacks throughout the day can help maintain energy and nutrition.

Healthy snack ideas include:

  • Cheese and crackers
  • Fresh fruit such as apple slices or grapes
  • Yoghurt or fromage frais
  • A handful of nuts (if suitable)
  • Toast with peanut butter or jam
  • Homemade flapjacks or oat bars

Encouraging regular snacks can be particularly helpful for people with smaller appetites.

Wednesday: Tea Party – The Joy of Social Eating

Food is about more than nutrition, it’s about connection, comfort and enjoyment. A simple afternoon tea is a lovely way to bring people together.

Tea party ideas:

  • Finger sandwiches (cucumber, egg mayo, ham)
  • Scones with jam and cream
  • Victoria sponge cake
  • Fruit loaf or banana bread
  • A pot of tea or coffee

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals often help clients enjoy small social moments like this, whether that’s hosting family visits or simply sharing tea and cake together.

Thursday: Hydration – Every Sip Matters

Staying hydrated is essential for overall health. As we age, we may not feel thirst as strongly, which makes it important to drink regularly throughout the day.

Helpful hydration tips:

  • Keep a drink within easy reach
  • Offer drinks regularly throughout the day
  • Include a variety of options such as water, tea, milk or squash
  • Try foods with high water content like soup, jelly or melon

Hydrating drink ideas:

  • Warm milky drinks before bed
  • Herbal teas
  • Fruit-infused water
  • Milkshakes

Friday: Fish or Fruit – Fresh and Nutritious

Fish is an excellent source of protein and omega-3, while fruit provides essential vitamins and fibre. Both are fantastic additions to a balanced diet.

Meal ideas include:

  • Baked salmon with new potatoes and vegetables
  • Tuna mayonnaise sandwich or jacket potato
  • Fish pie with peas
  • Fruit salad with yoghurt
  • Apple crumble with custard

These simple dishes can be both comforting and nutritious.

Saturday: Brunch – A Relaxed Weekend Treat

Brunch combines the best of breakfast and lunch and is perfect for a slower weekend morning.

Brunch ideas:

  • Avocado on toast with poached eggs
  • Pancakes with fruit and yoghurt
  • Bacon and grilled tomatoes on toast
  • Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel
  •  A fruit bowl with yoghurt and honey

Sharing a relaxed brunch can be a lovely way to spend time with family or a Care Professional.

Sunday: Smoothies and Shakes – Easy and Delicious

Smoothies and milkshakes are a fantastic way to boost nutrition, especially for those with smaller appetites. They’re easy to drink and can be packed with nutrients.

Try blending:

  • Banana, milk, and peanut butter
  • Strawberry, yoghurt, and honey
  • Mango with orange juice
  • Blueberries, oats, and milk

They can be enjoyed as a breakfast drink, afternoon refreshment, or even a dessert alternative.
