Carers Week 2026

From the 8th – 14th June, the UK will come together to recognise and celebrate the millions of unpaid carers who support loved ones every single day during Carers Week 2026. This national awareness campaign shines a light on the incredible contribution carers make to families, communities and society, while also raising awareness of the challenges many carers face.

This year’s theme is “Building Carer friendly Communities”, a campaign focused on creating places, services, and organisations where carers feel recognised, supported and valued. It encourages communities across the country to better understand the realities of caring and to ensure carers never feel invisible or alone.

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke, this message is incredibly important to us because caring does not only affect the person receiving support, it also impacts husbands, wives, sons, daughters, neighbours and friends who quietly dedicate so much of their time to caring for someone they love.

Understanding the Reality of Caring

Many people do not even see themselves as carers. They simply think of themselves as “helping Mum”, or “looking after Dad” or “checking in on a neighbour”. But caring responsibilities can quickly become a huge part of everyday life.

For many unpaid carers, the role can involve:

  • Supporting with personal care
  • Managing medication
  • Preparing meals
  • Attending appointments
  • Offering emotional support and companionship
  • Helping with mobility and day-to-day tasks

While caring can be rewarding, it can also be emotionally and physically demanding. Many carers balance their responsibilities alongside jobs, raising families and managing their own health needs. Over time, this can lead to exhaustion, stress, and feelings of isolation.

Carers Week exists to ensure unpaid carers are recognised, heard and supported. Across the UK there are millions of people providing unpaid care, many of whom do so quietly behind closed doors without ever asking for help.

What Does “Building Carer Friendly Communities” Mean?

A carer friendly community is one where carers are understood and supported in all aspects of life, from healthcare and workplaces to local businesses, schools and neighbourhoods.

It means creating environments where carers:

  • Feel acknowledged and appreciated
  • Know where to access help and advice
  • Are encouraged to prioritise their own wellbeing
  • Can ask for support without guilt
  • Feel connected rather than isolated

Sometimes, being a carer friendly community is about the small things, checking in on someone, offering practical help, listening without judgement or simply recognising the important roles carers play every day. For us, this year’s theme reflects exactly why compassionate care matters so much. Supporting ones person often means supporting the entire family around them too.

Why Carers Week Matters to Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke, we work closely with families every day and see first hand the dedication unpaid carers give to their loved ones. We also understand that carers sometimes need care and support too.

Our Care Professionals are there to work alongside families, not replace them. Whether it’s providing companionship visits, dementia support, personal care, meal preparation, or simply giving a family member a few hours to rest, our aim is to ease pressure and improve quality of life for everyone involved.

Even a small amount of support can make a significant difference. Home care and respite support can:

  • Give carers valuable time to recharge
  • Reduce stress and feelings of burnout
  • Help families maintain balance at home
  • Provide reassurance that loved ones are safe and supported
  • Allow carers to focus on their own wellbeing too

We often hear from families that having reliable support in place gives them peace of mind and helps them spend more meaningful quality time together, rather than feeling overwhelmed by daily tasks and responsibilities.

Supporting Carers Beyond Practical Care

Being a carer is not just physically demanding, it can also be emotionally challenging. Many carers worry constantly about the person they support and can feel guilty taking time for themselves. That is why emotional support, understanding and reassurance are just as important as practical help.

At Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke, we believe carers should feel empowered to ask for support when they need it. Reaching out is not a sign of failure, it is an important step towards protecting both the carer’s wellbeing and the wellbeing of the person receiving care. As a care provider rooted within the local community, we are passionate about helping create a more supportive environment for older adults and the people who care for them.

A Thank You to Every Carer

This Carers Week, we want to say thank you to every unpaid carer across South Cheshire and beyond. Your compassion, patience and dedication make an enormous difference every single day. The care you provide allows loved ones to remain connected to the comfort and familiarity of home, and your support is valued more than words can express.

Whether you have been caring for years or have recently found yourself supporting a loved one for the first time, you are not alone. If you are caring for a family member and feel you could benefit from additional support, respite care or simply advice about the options available, the team at Home Instead Newcastle-under-Lyme & Stoke is here to help.
