It's Dementia Action Week!

Dementia Action week this year is 13th-19th May. Organised by Alzheimers Society, it's aim is to raise awareness of dementia.

About Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week was set up by the Alzheimer’s Society, each year they focus on different aspects of raising awareness of dementia, this years’ focus is on diagnosis. 1 in 3 people living with dementia in the UK are currently undiagnosed!

Cornwall Dementia Conference

There are many events being held during Dementia Action Week including the Cornwall Dementia Conference which we are delighted to be attending. It’s on Friday 17th May at the Royal Cornwall Showground. This wonderful and informative event does so much to raise awareness of Dementia and the organisations that are helping people live with it, and their families. The conference will have speakers, workshops and live performances.

Professor Sube Banerjee starts the day with a talk on Quality of Life and Quality of Care in Dementia

We will hear from Teresa Greenaway and Kate Smith about the Dementia Support Workers that will help the Dementia Care Practitioners teams in Cornwall.

Dr Vicky Brown will speak about Brain Health. Her talk at the Integrated Admiral Nurse Service Care and Share Event was excellent so we are especially looking forward to this.

Kirsty Dexter will talk about Young Onset dementia and Libby Price will speak abut the Filo Project which has had real success in other counties.

Kate Smith from Memory Matters will talk about Lived Experience in the afternoon.

Matt Du Fue and Julia Paul will discuss their Living Well with Dementia Group.

It should be a great day and a chance to meet others and learn from them about how to improve Dementia Care and hopefully explain what we offer. At Home Instead our whole model of care was originally built around caring for people living with Dementia. The longer visits, introductions for new caregivers, the training and development and most of all the support from the office helping resolve the day-to-day issues all help properly support people at home, enjoying their lives where they want to be.

Dementia UK

One of our amazing caregivers, Cathy, is also completing a sponsored walking challenge this May to raise money for Dementia UK. She has to walk 31 miles in May, which she’s walking 1 mile each day before she starts work! Dementia UK have specialist Admiral nurses which provide a free service to people living with Dementia and their families.
