What have we been up to after the festive period?

Monday

Claddagh Group at Brian Boru
While the Christmas season may have passed, the Claddagh Group gathered to reminisce about their holiday festivities. Laughter echoed through the atmosphere as the group embraced their creative sides, engaging in various craft activities. They crafted St. Brigid’s Cross using colored paper and crocheted a cozy blanket.

Crafting paused momentarily for an enjoyable round of bingo, creating a friendly and competitive vibe within the group.

Lyndhurst Care Home – Exploring Generational Gamer Sessions
Lyndhurst, a purpose-built home near Leigh’s bustling center, is staffed by dedicated individuals catering to residents’ unique needs. As I stepped into the home, a warm and inviting atmosphere welcomed me.

In discussions with the two activity coordinators, we delved into the interests and preferences of the residents, aiming to tailor our generational gamer sessions to their diverse backgrounds. We emphasised the importance of activities promoting mental stimulation, physical well-being, cognitive engagement, and social interaction.

The staff expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming generational gamer sessions, highlighting the positive impact they could have on the residents. In the weeks ahead, we eagerly anticipate bringing these planned sessions to life, fostering moments of joy, connection, and engagement among the care home residents—a small yet significant step toward building a stronger, more supportive community for our older adults.

Wednesday

Meeting with Jackie at Leigh Miners nestled in the heart of Leigh, Leigh Miners Welfare Institute has been a landmark since 1957. I had the privilege of meeting Jackie, the driving force behind the new dementia café scheduled for January 31st, 10-12.

During our conversation, Jackie shared her motivation for starting the café, inspired by her father’s battle with dementia. Witnessing the challenges her father faced and the impact on her family, Jackie felt compelled to create a supportive space for individuals in the community. The rugby club’s facilities will be transformed into a warm and inviting space, offering not only tea, coffee, and treats but also a range of activities designed to stimulate and engage those living with dementia, from reminiscence sessions to gentle exercises and craft activities. The dementia café aims to create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and connected.
