Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is recommended for people who require support with their breathing. It can help you feel less breathless than before, allowing you to perform more tasks throughout the day. NIV can also improve your sleep quality, so you may feel more energetic and have fewer headaches upon waking. Improving your quality of life through ventilator nursing care will also reduce the likelihood of hospital admittance.
During home care for ventilator patients they will wear a tightly fitting face mask or a nasal pillow that create a seal so air does not leak out. This is attached to a small ventilator machine by a plastic tube which pushes air into the lungs under high pressure, opening the airways and allowing air to enter. If their clinical team has indicated it is necessary oxygen may also be given. Depending on their requirements the patient may need ventilator care all the time or only certain parts of the day or night.
As with any treatment there can be side effects while caring for a ventilated patient. The most common are dry mouth and stuffy noses, which our Care Professionals can easily assist with as needed. A poorly fitted mask can lead to soreness on the bridge of the nose or a large leak of air, which can be fixed with a replacement mask. Our Care Professionals are confident in how to support you and communicate with your clinical team to ensure you are receiving the best care.
