Snow is NO Problem for Harrogate Care Company

Despite the snow and freezing temperatures last week, the caring team at Home Instead made every effort to reach their clients. Home Instead who support older people living in their own homes in and around the towns of Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk know how important it is to ensure that they make that home visit despite the difficult conditions.

The team awoke to heavy snow on Friday morning and it was all hands on deck to make sure each client was visited by their CAREGiver.  If they couldn’t  make the journey by car,  the team took to walking,  some walked 8 miles or more to make sure they got to their clients. Staff family members even helped out and stepped in to taxi  the CAREGivers around to make sure they could travel and arrive safely for work.

Co-Owner of Home Instead,  Sheena Van Parys explains: “The reliability of the service we provide is an essential part of what Home Instead is all about. This reliability becomes even more important when the people we are caring for become even more vulnerable due to the cold and the fact that they really can’t venture out. The dedication, commitment, professionalism, and reliability of the Home Instead team continues as usual despite the adverse conditions and the team spirit has been fantastic  Our CAREGivers do an amazing job with total commitment and truly go above and beyond to support our clients”.

Although the pandemic and the current lockdown is restricting our normal activities,  here is some advice from Home Instead in the colder weather :

>Clear walkways and handrails of snow and ice- Put down salt or other ice melter.

>Encourage seniors to stay inside- Falls often spell disaster for older adults. Bring in mail and newspapers for them which you can do and still keep your distance .

>Check supplies- Of food, medication and emergency items like flashlights, batteries, and battery-powered radio

>Check to make sure a portable/space heater is being used properly- Preferably plug into outlet, not extension cord. Keep at least 3 feet away from anything that could burn, including the wall.

>Be a friend- Some seniors can get very isolated and severe weather can make it worse. During lockdown pick up the phone and have a conversation to alleviate loneliness.
