Local organisation Home Instead, who provide support to older people living in their own homes and Over the Rainbow Care, who run dementia day centres in the area recently joined forces to host a Strawberry Tea Party and raffle to raise money for Carers Week. The event was held at St Andrew’s Church in Harrogate and with all the proceeds being donated to the charity Carers’ Resource who offer support and advice to family carers in and around the Harrogate and Ripon area.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

This year the focus is on building Carer Friendly Communities. Communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own.

Carers Week is brought to life by the individuals and organisations that come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Locally Carers’ Resource offer a comprehensive information and signposting service covering everything from specific illnesses and disabilities to short breaks and holidays and from transport to long-term care.

Their staff can guide you through your caring role offering individually tailored support, advice on benefits entitlement, the chance to talk and guidance through the maze of local voluntary and statutory sector services available. They also run carer support groups, lunches and outings as well as visiting carers individually at their homes or a chat on the phone to offer companionship and extra support as and when they need it.

Sheena Van Parys from Home Instead commented; “Both Home Instead and Over the Rainbow enjoyed teaming up to host this tea party and to raise important funds for Carers’ Resource. We raised over £100 from the event and this money will help fund carers outings and help with transport costs to give carers in the community a well-earned break. It was great to work together to make our communities carer friendly and to recognise the important job that carers do every day.”
