Local organisations including East Thirsk Community Association, The Thirsk Rotary Club, Northallerton and District Round Table and Home Instead recently teamed up to provide the older residents of East Thirsk with a free complementary Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
Every year East Thirsk Community Association organise a free Christmas lunch to the older residents of East Thirsk, the event is held at East Thirsk Community Hall, Hambleton Place. This year over 50 residents enjoyed a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings and Christmas pudding.
The Thirsk Royal British Legion Band played Christmas carols during the meal, encouraging everyone to sing along and afterwards there was a raffle which everyone enjoyed.
The event is an annual social event that brings older people together and helps alleviate isolation and loneliness at this festive time of year as well as enjoying a delicious meal supplied by Johnson’s of Thirsk butchers.
The Thirsk Rotary Club, Northallerton and District Round Table and local at home care provider Home Instead teamed up to support this annual event and generously sponsored all of the catering.
Cynthia Hesmondhalgh, Chairperson of East Thirsk Community Association commented; “it is great that with the help of local organisations we can continue to provide this festive meal every year. It provides an opportunity for older people to get together and meet old friends and make new ones. Christmas can be a very lonely time for some people. I’d like to thank everyone involved including the army of volunteers who gave up their time and did everything from setting the tables to serving the meal and of course the washing up.”
Feedback and comments on the event have been well received, with many people already looking forward to the next one. This really is becoming a fixture in the community’s social calendar, enabling older people to get together, enjoy good food, meet people and have a great time.
