A recent event in Harrogate entitled ‘Later Life Matters’ has been hailed as a great success by the organisers and plans are in place to host it again next year.
The event which took place at the Cairn Hotel brought together organisations that can help and support people during the later years of life. Information ranged from acquiring quality care and support at home, to financial planning, moving house and planning ahead to protect your family’s future.
Planning for later life is important in our area as a recent census report has indicated an almost 20 per cent increase in the 65 and over population of North Yorkshire in the past ten years, a trend which is set to continue.
The information event provided older people and their families with free advice and information about the services available to them in their local area. Exhibitors at the event who also presented included: Home Instead, Christies Care, Cardale Financial Planning, Berwins Solicitors, Yorkshire Move Managers, AGE UK and Dementia Forward who offered information, advice and solutions to help older people in the area.
The event also showcased a number of local organisations who provide support including Over the Rainbow, who specialise in dementia day centres in Harrogate, Wetherby and Ripon and Memory Bank who specialise in reminiscence work using archive films to bring past events and experiences to life, prompting stories and memories to share and enjoy.
The feedback was very positive about the day as it was a great opportunity to hear about how local organisations can help as we get older to ensure that we all live well and live life to the full.
Sheena Van Parys, owner of Home Instead in Harrogate, who specialise in companionship care to older people in their own homes explained, “Events like these are so important because many older people and their families struggle to know where to turn to for support and advice, especially so when a crisis hits. The event was both useful and insightful. It was great that so many organisations throughout the local community got involved.”
