Local Care Company Delivers Specialist Parkinson’s Training

Local company Home Instead who care for older people living in their own homes in and around the towns of Thirsk, Ripon and Harrogate are now fully qualified to deliver specialist Parkinson’s training in house.

Sheena Van Parys, co-owner of Home Instead comments; “we support a lot of people who have Parkinson’s, so we thought it was important that our caregiving team were fully trained and able to support their clients with Parkinson’s effectively. We have worked in partnership with the UK Parkinson's Excellence Network and I have recently attended the ‘Parkinson’s Explored – A Train the Trainer Course’ to gain the necessary skills to personally deliver the ‘Parkinson’s Explained’ workshop to my team”.

The ‘Parkinson’s Explained’ workshop is designed to give all levels of staff in nursing and residential homes and those working with people affected by Parkinson’s in their own homes, an improved understanding of Parkinson’s. The workshop aims to promote and share models of good practise in care by addressing the challenges experienced by people with Parkinson’s in relation to mobility, swallowing, communication and other activities of daily living, helping to ensure these challenges are fully understood by those providing care.

Sheena Van Parys added; “it is great that we can now deliver this training in house, ensuring that all of

our CAREGiving team become experts in this field, giving them the knowledge and confidence to support our clients living with Parkinson’s.”

Feedback received so far on the training has been very positive, with the Home Instead CAREGivers gaining more knowledge, awareness, and insight into the disease.
