Home Instead pink launch the local WOW Guide

Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk based Home Care Company, Home Instead, has put together a fantastic informative ‘What’s on Where Guide,’ which is a comprehensive directory of local, regular events for elderly and socially isolated people.

Speaking about the motivation to produce the WOW Guide, Lisa Stirk, Community Coordinator at Home Instead, said, “There is a huge emphasis within the NHS about the importance of Social Prescribing and the negative impact on the elderly’s health due to loneliness and isolation.

Social prescribing enables GPs, nurses and other primary care professionals to refer people to a range of local, non-clinical services. Recognising that people’s health is determined primarily by a range of social, economic and environmental factors, social prescribing seeks to address people’s needs in a holistic way. It also aims to support individuals to take greater control of their own health by getting involved in a variety of activities which are typically provided by voluntary and community sector organisations.

“In researching groups and societies going on in our local area that CAREGiver’s could accompany clients to, or that clients could attend independently, I realised just how active our local area is. And then I had the idea to consolidate the information in one ‘easy to find’ leaflet and share more widely, and that’s when the WOW guide was born.”

The impressive directory is available to anyone in our local community and Home Instead would like to welcome all GP surgeries and hospitals across the area to hold the guides to assist them in signposting when dealing with loneliness in their patients.

The WOW guide includes detailed information of regular activity groups, i.e. lunch clubs, coffee mornings, afternoon teas, exercise classes, interest and hobbies clubs, societies and ideas for days out.

Lisa continued, “As you can imagine, local groups are delighted to see their coffee mornings, lunch clubs, dance classes and support groups publicised so it’s a ‘win -win’ situation. The groups will benefit, our clients will benefit and so will the wider community who are in need of this valuable information.”
