Home care company backs government scheme to fight Dementia

Local home care company Home Instead is actively backing the latest government advertising campaign to encourage an early diagnosis of dementia.

The government-backed advert tells the story of a man in the early stages of dementia, and his daughter, who feels she is losing her father. The TV and press campaign highlight the importance of contacting your GP if there are signs of confusion, memory loss or anxiety.

Sheena and Andrew Van Parys, owners of Home Instead in Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk are delighted that the government has initiated this campaign, as they feel passionately about encouraging an early diagnosis so that the right support can be put in place. As the festive period is a time when family members are reunited, sadly the couple has noticed it is also the time that many people realise that a friend or relative may have a memory problem.

Andrew comments, ''Dementia is such a wide-spread illness and as our caregivers are frequently visiting the elderly in their homes we are in a powerful position to spot the early warning signs and educate others about what to keep a look out for. These warning signs include: a decline in memory such as forgetting names of friends or familiar objects, a decline in reasoning and communication skills, feeling angry or upset about being forgetful and the gradual loss of skills needed to carry out daily activities.''

Andrew continues, ''We are proud to support many dementia sufferers by providing consistent care at home and building a good relationship of trust and understanding with our clients. We find time and time again that the earlier dementia support is put in place, the better the quality of life beyond diagnosis. Therefore we would urge any one who is concerned about themselves or a loved one, to contact their GP as soon as possible.''
