Home Instead who support older people living in and around the towns of Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk recently held a scam awareness workshop for local Ripon charity Carers’ Resource.

Home Instead were only too happy to run a workshop for Carers’ Resource as they thoroughly support the vital work that they do in the local community. Carers’ Resource offer family carers a comprehensive information and signposting service covering everything from specific illnesses and disabilities to short breaks and holidays and from transport to long-term care. They guide carers through their caring role offering individually tailored support, advice on benefits entitlement and the chance to talk and give guidance through the maze of local voluntary and statutory sector services available.

They also run carer support groups, lunches and outings as well as visiting carers individually at their homes or a chat on the phone to offer companionship and extra support as and when they need it.

The team from Home Instead held their ‘Be Scam Aware’ workshop for the family carers who meet regularly at the monthly friendship group organised by Carers’ Resource at Tiffin’s Café in Ripon. Delicious cakes were served while Sheena Van Parys and Pet Fowler Watts from Home Instead talked about the dangers of scams and the potential threat to older people, offering tips and advice to educate older people on how to protect themselves from falling victim to mass market scams.

Home Instead, has partnered with national scam awareness charity, Think Jessica, to launch a public education programme. As part of the campaign, the team at Home Instead in Harrogate, Ripon and Thirsk will be rolling out a series of workshops in the local area in the coming months. The aim of the workshops is to share information with attendees on the scale of the problem and the most common scams targeting the elderly as well as what to do if they have fallen victim to scammers.

Home Instead has also put together a free ‘Senior Fraud Protection Kit’ which contains information on the most common scams, tools to help assess the risk of an elderly loved one, plus really useful checklists to help seniors take practical action to lower the risk of becoming a victim of a scam.

Owner and organiser of the workshops, Sheena Van Parys, said, “It was great to be invited along to the Carers’ Resource friendship group and to talk about the dangers of scams. Carers’ Resource do such great work in the community, supporting and advising family carers who look after loved ones tirelessly. If we can help in anyway and support the work that they do than that is fantastic.”
